[ZERO DAY ALERT] Ransomware Targets MS Office 365 Users

Apparently, MS Office 365 built-in security tools are not cutting it.  A new strain of the Cerber Ransomware is now targeting MS Office 365 email users with a massive zero-day attack that has the ability to bypass Office 365's built-in security tools.

A new report released by cloud security provider Avanan shows a massive zero-day attack targeting Office 365 users with phishing emails having malicious file attachment payloads.

In a Deja Vu moment, -- this is getting old very fast -- Cerber uses social engineering to trick users to allow macros, just like the recent Locky and Dridex attacks.

While Avanan did not specify the exact number of users possibly hit by the ransomware, Microsoft reported in its first quarter 2016 that there are almost 18.2 Million Office 365 subscribers. Although Cerber originally emerged in March, the malware campaign targeting Office 365 users began on June 22. However, Microsoft started blocking the malicious file attachment on June 23, but as we all know that is a game of whack-a-mole and the bad guys have the advantage.

"While difficult to precisely measure how many users got infected," Avanan estimated that "roughly 57 percent of organizations using Office 365 received at least one copy of the malware into one of their corporate mailboxes during the time of the attack."

The Cerber ransomware strain is a weird one. It not only encrypts user files and displays a ransom note, but also takes over the user's audio system to read out its ransom note informing them that their files were encrypted.

What To Do About It

Weapons-grade backups are rule #1

Disable Macros in your MS Office programs

Step end-users through effective security awareness training

Since phishing has risen to the #1 malware infection vector, and attacks are getting through your filters too often, getting your users effective security awareness training which includes frequent simulated phishing attacks is a must. )

(On EFI vs BIOS

Traditionally, computers have used a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) to compile a system report listing the hardware that the computer has available to it. This includes the CPU model and its specifications, the amount of RAM installed, any storage devices (like any hard drives installed via IDE or SATA) and other devices (optical drives, graphics cards, sound cards, or any other expansion card). This report is then passed on to the operating system so that it knows what it’s working with.

A system called the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI & UEFI). It performs much the same functions as a BIOS, but allows extra features (such as support for a graphical user interface and built in support for booting over a network).

Microsoft started providing support for EFI booting from Windows 8 onwards. Booting from EFI results in much faster boot times, is by default much more secure (protecting you from malware hijacking your computer or running outside of what can be detected and fixed by antivirus software) and allows you to boot from devices larger than 2TB. Windows 10, like Windows 8, supports booting from either a BIOS (legacy mode) or the EFI. As it applies to security, preventing some systems from booting up to alternate bootable devices that may steal data or do damage. There is a UEFI partition hidden that is part of this security and for backup purposes is needed often in addition to the 'C' partition, therefore making whole disk image backups more particle.

Unfortunately, driver support can be a bit hit and miss when booting Windows in EFI mode. While BIOS mode is slower and will one day be phased out, that day is not today.)

(Driver Tip: Updating Drivers Manually in Windows 10

Most drivers these days will install automatically with just the click of the mouse. However there are still some drivers that require a manual installation. Here is a step by step guide on how to do that in Windows 10:

1. Open Windows 10 Control Panel by pressing Win+X (Windows key and X key) at the same time and clicking Control Panel.

2. Click View By and Choose Small Icons.

3. Click Device Manager.

4. In Device Manager window, expand categories and locate the device that you wish to update the driver for. Then right-click on the device name and selectUpdate Driver Software.

5. In the pop-up window, you will see two options. Click Browse my computer for driver software.

6. Choose Browse My Computer For Driver Software.

7. Click on Browse to find the location of the downloaded driver file and browse to the location of the driver file. Keep the box marked Include Subfolderschecked.

8. Once the location has been selected, click Next.

Windows will locate the file automatically and install it.
