(Learn the best practices to protect your data against ransomware

Recently, we have witnessed new encryption-based ransomware targeting personal files and even network-based devices. Encryption-based ransomware, such as CryptoWall, CryptoLocker and TorrentLocker are on the rise.

What is an encryption-based ransomware?

Encryption-based ransomware, such as CryptoWall, CryptoLocker, and TorrentLocker, encrypts files stored on computers, and even network drives.

Once infected, you are left with the option to either pay the ransom to regain access to your files or give up all your precious data previously stored on the computer or storage device.

Ransomware has become a growing threat to home users and small officeswith less sophisticated defense systems. Here are some tips and tricks to avoid becoming another victim of ransomware:

1. Be a self-conscious and always aware end-user

No security suite can offer the security that an educated end-user can build for himself while being self-conscious and aware at every click. No need to be paranoid, just don't visit websites that stream live soccer games from pirated televisions over outdated Flash based web playersas missing updates from your browser or outdated Java can be exactly the type of targets that ransomware web based attacks are looking for!

2. Install a reputable security suite

In the most recent TorrentLocker attack going on these days, victims are extorted to pay approximately 1.15 Bitcoins, which is worth around 441 EUR (493 USD). There’s a time limit for the payment, which, if surpassed, will double the ransom value while keeping you from accessing your encrypted data.

According to our partner, security company Heimdal Security, 2 days after the attack, antivirus detection was still unsatisfactoryonly 19 out of 57 antivirusproducts were able to detect a TorrentLocker related file at VirusTotal.com.)

(This is an early heads-up about a nasty new hybrid ransomware strain

satana-ransomware-encrypts-your-boot-record-and-prevents-your-pc-from-starting.pngTo start off, there is a new ransomware strain called "Satana" (the reference is clear, just take the last "a" off) which is a blend between classic file encryption malware and the Petya strain which locks the Master Boot Record (MBR).

This looks like a Petya copycat, but for each encrypted file, Satana prepends their email address to each file like this: "email@domain.com_filename.extension".

Satana then encrypts the MBR and replaces it with its own. The first time when a user reboots their workstation, Satana's MBR boot code will load and the only thing the machine will show is Satana's ransom note in red on black (click on the picture for an enlarged view).

Security researcher Hasherezade posted the initial discovery at Malwarebytes, and stated it might be possible to recover the original MBR. That does not mean you can decrypt the files though. Recovering MBR records via Windows' cumbersome command-line interface is not for the weak of heart.

According to the Hasherazade, the code looks like a work-in-progress, as its developers are still working on it. Stay tuned, this puppy is going to cause some damage when they start pumping it out in volumes like Zepto is at the moment.

Here is are some more ransomware "highlights":

New Zepto Is A Kleptomaniac Locky Spinoff

The new Zepto strain is a monster. It's spewing out spam messages at an alarming rate, and looks very much like Locky, which in itself is a bad sign because it could be the very same cyber mafia and these guys are very sophisticated.

Locky is a dangerous as-yet unbroken ransomware that helped the authors of the Nuclear exploit kit to score US$12 million in revenue from 1.8 million attacks cast over one month. Monthly income for developers sits around US$100,000.

Cisco's Talos researchers are particularly concerned that Zepto will move into exploit kits and that attackers will move on from spam to other distribution methods, such as malvertising, according to ThreatPost.

EduCrypt Ransomware Teaches Users A Needed Lesson?

The EduCrypt strain is based on the Hidden Tear ransomware strain. EduCrypt encrypts only a small part of the file and folders and it doesn’t communicate with a Command & Control server. EduCrypt is basically harmless and intends to teach users a lesson, but it's "shock therapy" and causes a lot of lost time for IT people to fix it.

Educrypt uses an extension list and files will be encrypted with a static password of HDJ7D-HF54D-8DN7D, and the encrypted files have the .isis file extension.  Once the encryption process ends a note called README.txt is created on the desktop and the note also comes with a link to the decryptor.

An infection with EduCrypt is still a major hassle and you could see it as a shot across the bow to make sure you have all security layers in place to make sure this does not happen with the real thing.

Find Out If Your Email Server Will Let Spoofed Emails Through...

Ransomware attacks are getting more and more sophisticated. Some strains now grab an email address from your own domain as the "from" address and trick your users into believing the email is from a co-worker or the CEO.

Are you aware that one of the first things hackers try is to see if they can spoof the email address of your CEO? If they are able to commit "CEO Fraud", penetrating your network is like taking candy from a baby.

Would you like to know if hackers can spoof your domain? KnowBe4 can help you find out if this is the case with our free Domain Spoof Test. It's quick, easy (just one email from us to you) and often a shocking discovery. Find out now if your email server is configured correctly, many are not!)
