Geekly Update - 01 September 2016

http://askbobrankin.com/geekly_update_01_september_2016.html

Fri 716  9/2/2016

Whether it reappears or not, it is time to make sure your computer has not been infected by malware. There are many tools that you can use to clean it yourself. If you still need assistance, just contact one of our leaders.

 3) If your computer doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore it. Unusual noises, feeling hotter than usual, sluggishness, or anything else that is different than what you are accustomed requires immediate attention. Keep in mind that most of these types of problems don’t go away, they actually get worse over time. The first thing to determine is whether behavior is a hardware problem, a software problem, or a combination of both. Many members can figure things out on their own by searching for troubleshooting steps and other solutions online. It is always good to have a second computer, smartphone or tablet on hand for doing these searches while working on the problem computer. If necessary, get assistance in finding out what the problem is.

 4) Here is probably the most important piece of advice, which I’ve brought up many times before and will continue to do so again. Backing up your computer is vital. Your documents, pictures, and other items you save on the hard drive are generally irreplaceable, and there are many backup solutions that are available. The best backup solution I recommend that will protect you from many things that can go wrong is to create an image of your hard drive onto an external hard drive. A current hard drive image of your computer will allow you to have your computer up and running as if nothing happened within a few hours rather than a few days when a hard drive crashes and you are unable to clean up a malware attack and the only solution is to reinstall, or the operating system goes haywire and  only solution is to reinstall. A  ransomware attack is another problem that a hard drive image can help protect you against. Generally ransomware doesn’t encrypt the image files, so restoring the image should restore your data unaffected. There are several tools that are available that can create images, and we plan on having future workshops on them.

  5) Scam Tech Support for Apple Apple users no longer need to feel neglected by fraudsters. I recently got a new client who called the number on her screen for MAC support, which was some company that installed some crud on her computer for a lot of money, leaving her computer so slow it was almost unusable; and her email stopped working. Fortunately, I mentioned her troubles to my wife BEFORE her Mac’s web browser showed a message that she must not shut her computer but call the number on the screen because of a security problem. So she sent me an email (I was at a club meeting) and closed her Macbook. The website did indeed look like it was a serious affair...I can understand those who get taken in.)

Microsoft conscripts upload bandwidth in Windows 10's latest Insider update (this concerns me.  Going back to Win 7 and 8, in Services there has be services for peer services (read bitTorrent) in which files (in this case Windows update files) on many users systems already updated can be shared by other users updating their systems.  So instead of all of use going directly to MS servers only for updates, we get them from any compuers on the Internet that already has these files.  Since there are no guarantees secure and safe updates, this could be a means of delivering all forms of malware to unsuspecting users as normal updates.  Something we have to watch carefully.  I have in the past been disabling four services, but this could be dangerous for non-techs to deal with.)
