Wow, the following is something I would have never thought possible, but someone did it.

Use a bunch of USB Flash drives in a RAID array.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dougISKs2vQ

Now I don't care for RAID much, complications I don't need, but... I think I will get around to doing this.

The strip is a powered one and I found a few for less.  Haven't looked at the drives yet.  If one can go

as high as RAID 5, and you restrict it to just data, you have a case of not needing to really back it up,

but I would just in case.  Never use it for the OS.  And because its USB, each drive is hot swapable, meaning

you can pull out a drive (usually one the system says is bad) and plug in a replacement.  The compute over

some time will rebuild from the others what it should have on it.  With RAID, you spread the load of data

automatically over all the drives used, but only one contains a whole image of the file, while the others

have equal sized fragments of the whole file.  The whole files are scattered over the all the drives used

in the array.  Interesting project at least for me.

This isn't just about getting to your login screen faster. Microsoft is using the Spotlight Theme on the Widnows 10 Lock Screen to push unwanted app downloads and post ads and suggested links. It's all turning into an intrusive, bandwidth wasting advertising platform. (The lock screen, not the whole Win 10 platform.)

Scam Of The Week: A New Type Of Tech Support Fraud

Warn your employees, friends and family...

Scam_of_The_Week.jpgWe spotted an unusual phishing email which revealed a new scam your users will soon find in their inbox. Time to inoculate them before it becomes a problem!

Many online service providers like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Twitter, and PayPal have adopted a policy to warn users via email when there is a possible security-related event like "unusual sign-in activity".

Copies of these emails have been used for credentials phishing for a few years, but the problem is these security notifications are now being used by bad guys as a new attack vector for a tech support scam.

These new "phish" point victims to a 1-800 number where either a scammer picks up, or the victim gets sent to voice mail hell for a while and their number is queued for a fraudulent follow-up call like the one below, which was sent to us by one of our customers -- who were well trained -- and did not fall for the scam.

My nephew has a dash cam video and is looking for a FREE program to edit the video (you know how CCS members like me love FREE).   Does anyone have any suggestions that I could pass on to him?

How To Download DashCam Video to a PC or a Mac
(The correct term is actually upload, since this comes from media to the PC or Mac.)
   http://www.thedashcamstore.com/how-to-retrieve-videos-from-your-dashcam/
Free Software (some with paid upgrade for more features):
   https://dashcamviewer.com/  (Mac or Windows)
I just use VLC [Player] since it's already on my computer. You press Media -> Convert, then I pick H.264 + MP3
   http://www.squared5.com/ Squared 5
   http://www.registratorviewer.com/index_en.html The Registrator
(Doesn't list Windows 10, but should work.)
(Some of these were posted at:

      https://www.reddit.com/r/Dashcam/comments/2w5ww1/what_software_do_you_use_for_your_dashcam_videos/ )
Non-free options include Final Cut Pro, or if you just want basic editing, iMovie.
Once downloaded to a PC or Mac and converted to a standard format, any video editor should be able to take over the editing tasks. Unless you need very high quality output, most consumer PCs (not tablets or 2-in-1s) can handle the task from a hardware point of view.
Standard formats include mpeg4, H.264 + mp3 and the Windows Media Player format.
If you think the footage may be needed in a legal case, don't edit excessively.
