Your days of watching pirated live streams may be over, thanks to Cisco

I'm not sure this would affect streaming from after the fact pirate sites. The ones which are offering illegal streams, but not while the TV shows are still in progress.

As for the fears that this would prevent a Sling Box from working, no. Sling Boxes are networked in a way which always points back to the cable box or DVR they are attached to. These are readily identifiable as legitimate sources.

Windows 10 Can Automatically Turn Wi-Fi Back On After a Few Hours

Probably useful for some situations. But there's a reason I start up Windows without WiFi on. It prevents all those Startup items from trying to access the Internet all at once and crashing the PC. And during a virus scan or a backup session, I don't want WiFi waking up at all until the session is over. If even then.

How to change your DNS and (maybe) get the internet back

I had something else happen which blocked my access to all Microsoft sites on my AT&T network. I switched to OpenDNS, and these sites were no longer blocked. So this trick sometimes does work in some instances. But if Netflix or whatever is itself suffering a DDoS atack, changing your DNS provider will do nothing to help. One more advantage of OpenDNS is that it does not spy on traffic. Recent revelations indicate that AT&T may be spying on trafic passing through its DNS servers.

How a simple piece of malware (only 60 or so name and password combinations) nearly brought down Netflix: (the Mirai Malware DYN DNS DDoS attack)

http://www.techconnect.com/article/3134039/hacking/chinese-firm-admits-its-hacked-products-were-behind-fridays-massive-ddos-attack.html?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=TechConnect%20Daily%202016-10-24&utm_term=techconnect_daily

Seagate's new $85 5TB hard drive is actually affordable (sounds great, but so many that cannot utilize fully a 500GB or 1TB drive, is it worth it?)

5TB can disappear awfully fast when archiving video collections, high-res photo collections (RAW images) or years worth of PC backups from multiple machines. I myself consume 1TB drives almost like candy.

Windows 10: The Sirius A is a full desktop PC that fits in your pocket

Pair this with a Screen Beam Mini 2 Continuum and a USB mouse and keyboard, and you have a PC. But this device is pricey for what it has in it. And the screen is too small for my aging eyes for a full Windows desktop display on the device.

Malwarebytes snaps up PC scrubber AdwCleaner (I hope this works out, I use both, and Adwcleaner is a very good tool)

Too soon to say, but I have a good feeling about this. By itself, Adwcleaner isn't the most intuitive tool to use, so if Malwarebytes keeps it free and makes it easier to use, I'm in favor of this combination.

Free tool protects PCs from master boot record attacks (this looks very interesting, but I have not had a chance to do anything with it until I get paroled)

As stated in the article, Secure Boot and GPT disk structures (with UEFI Boot) make this type of attack moot. Not that there isn't GPT-encrypting malware, but this type of MBR-based malware won't affect more modern PCs and devices. My tablet and my NUC PC are both GPT and UEFI with Secure Boot.

Here’s how to see all the drivers you have on your PCs

Interesting post on listing Windows drivers and exporting the info to a file. I've known for some time how to do this in Linux, and being able to do so in Windows might help in some cases. But being able to back all the drivers on my NUC is elusive. Some drivers can't be backed up with DriverMax and other driver backup programs. Intel owns these drivers, so something in there locks them and they can't be backed up or updated except by using Intel's own tools, which may or may not work in Windows 10 Pro Anniversary Update at any given time.

Ungoogled Chromium Strips Away the Privacy-Invading Features from Chromium

I found stripping away the Google features from Chrome/Chromium actually rendered the browser difficult to use. Many video streaming sites don't work properly, especially using Chromium under Linux, and other types of sites may also experience difficulties. I reverted my Linux to genuine Google Chrome Beta, just to keep Flash Player up to date.

Not necessarily related, Yahoo logins have not been working for me in any browser, any OS, since the upgrade following the announcement of the 2014 security breach. Something has changed there, and I can't get the login to take any passwords. I have to use Account Recovery every second login attempt.

Unfortunately, those fitness bands and apps have been shown time and again to be wildly inaccurate in their estimates of how much exercise and calorie burning users have done. NBC Nightly News had a recent story comparing five of these devices, and none was accurate.

Learn About Your Local Elections Now So You Don't Fake It In the Voting Booth

I downloaded my sample ballot from the Dupage Board of Elections. More important in upcoming local elections (they're always in a non-Presidential year). But Willowbrook doesn't have its own local newspaper, so online news sources like the Patch may be the best bet for information on the candidates for local offices.

Sale of Kodi 'fully-loaded' streaming boxes faces legal test

The history of Kodi has been riddled with charges that it does not respect copyrights as well as other media management interfaces. Plex, Windows Media Center and others do try to limit access to apps which are known to allow connections to pirated content. I know how to install some pirate content apps into Kodi under Linux, and the results could be pretty bad news for anyone trying to defend Kodi and Kodi boxes against these charges. Worse, Kodi apps do not warn when they are about to access pirated content, so users don't know when they are crossing this line.

For my own media streaming and management I am currently using a Slingbox M2 device connected to my AT&T U-Verse DVR. I can also get a TiVo Stream for my TiVo Roamio OTA DVR. The apps and interfaces of these devices do not allow easy loading of apps or channels which can access pirated content.

With nearly everything I want to watch covered by legitimate services, and being a paid U-Verse TV services customer, I do not want to deal with the possible consequences of using software or a streaming box which could access pirated content. For me, it just isn't worth the risks.

And there's always the risk that accessing pirated content can make legitimate content go away for lack of measurable ratings points. Think about that if you are considering circumventing copyright laws.

(Ok, unless your living in a six foot hole in the ground, the nations Internet has been hit today by some unknown at this time figuring out how to use the unsecure IoT devices (Internet of Things) to stop a lot of Internet commerce.  Hopefully, those making these unsecure IoT devices will wake-up to prevent hackers from using the devices for their bad act.  Just remember, all the devices already manufactured that likely can't be fixed.)
