Notebooks could learn something from HP's ridiculously rugged school laptops

http://www.pcworld.com/article/3146123/windows/notebooks-could-learn-something-from-hps-ridiculously-rugged-school-laptops.htm

The $329 base price cited here

http://www.laptopreleasedate.com/hp-probook-x360-11-g1-review-specs-price/

is not for the model reviewed in the PC World article. For non-educators, the price would probably be in the mid-$500's, I would guess. But for a nice, portable and capable 2 in 1 PC, this one (note that it has Win 10 Pro) looks like a good deal on a good PC. And did they mention how rugged it is supposed to be?

Best Laptop Under $300

This was last year's upgrade for my tablet. Read below (the 2 in 1).

Asus Transformer Mini review: (2 in 1)

http://www.techconnect.com/article/3140635/tablet-pc/asus-transformer-mini-review-this-2-in-1-delivers-good-enough-computing-on-the-cheap.html?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=TechConnect%20Daily%202016-12-01&utm_term=techconnect_daily

This is the 2 in 1 I would buy now to replace my Transformer Book if the tablet needed to be replaced. Right now,it doesn't.

Unrelated but interesting:

GoPro HERO+ LCD HD Video Camera

http://www.techconnect.com/article/3146246/mobile/18-off-gopro-hero-lcd-hd-video-camera-deal-alert.html?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=TechConnect%20Daily%202016-12-01&utm_term=techconnect_daily

The company which makes this is in pretty bad financial condition, but this looks like a good deal on a pretty on the go video camera.

Malwarebytes Junkware Removal Tool removes Adware and PUPs

All Command Line. Does not allow review and exclusions of wanted items. Not well developed. No idea of the reputation of the real author. It looks like this is not really a Malwarebytes product, but probably a feature enhancement for the flagship product, still in the development stage. I would avoid this tool.

$89 Linux laptop? Check out the new Pinebook from Raspberry Pi rival Pine

Underpowered, not enough storage or RAM, and won't run full desktop Ubuntu. Sometimes by trying to save money you get something utterly useless. That's not saving anything.

Re. FYI#781 (Sun 11/27/2016)

Office Depot, OfficeMax claim new computers have malware to sell useless removal services

The article cited Best Buy as well. Just being fair here.

RIP, Apple routers: There are now better Wi-Fi options

The article misses the point. It isn't that Apple is abandoning a perfectly good standard. It's about all the third-party products which are tuned to the AirPlay standard. Apple Networking doesn't translate with some of these products into Windows Networking, so it isn't as simple as buying a new router and automatically being able to connect your streaming devices, NAS and older Apple devices to the new Windows Standards network. If only Apple had ever made their products Windows friendly -- but they never have done so.

Re. FYI#782 (Mon 11/28/2016)

The Best Antivirus Protection of 2016 (scroll down and read the article)

And for the Free Antivirus programs:

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2388652,00.asp

Read carefully the criteria and explanations as to how decisions were made. I have the greatest of respect for Neil Rubenking on PC security matters, but his ratings can have a personal bias. That said, any of his listed AV products would be good enough or better for most users.

Avira, my choice, is indeed slow to scan my PCs. Browser protection for anything other than Chrome is unimportant to me, as I don't use IE for web surfing, and last I read, Edge doesn't play well with anybody's browser shields.

Anti-phishing is not the AV program's job, IMHO. Neither is providing an enhanced firewall. There are other programs for HIPS protection. Calling malicious site blocking anti-phishing is a misnomer. I place zero trust in this category, as it seems to me to be vague and misleading. A web browser, like an email client, should be providing its own anti-phishing protections.

As for Real-Time Protection missing some malware .EXEs, this is expecting more of heuristics than anybody actually delivers. Heuristics have only slowed my PC performance, and spit out false-psitives. I have no use whatsoever for Heuristics. They just aren't good enough at telling friend from foe yet.

I would never allow any AV program to download and install any software or "features" which are available elsewhere. None of these add-ons has ever impressed me as comparable to best in class freeware from other sources. And especaially "free VPN" services -- they are all bogus. Do not be fooled into using them.

That said, if you like being spied upon and putting up with advertising popups for upgraded products, go ahead and accept Rubenking's advice and use Avast or AVG Free. (In all fairness, Avira Free is not spyware free either.)

Malwarebytes was listed as a specialty program because Rubenking doesn't think this class of product has any proactive value. He is wrong on that point. There are other useful antimalware stand alone scanners which were not included for the same reason.

In general, Rubenking favors paid AV over free AV, and this too is personal bias. There are not many compromises for most folks in using free solutions.

Linux hardening: A 15-step checklist for a secure Linux server

This is not free and unfettered access content. It is also not about Linux on the desktop, but is aimed at administrators of corporate Linux servers. (Or so it appears from what can be seen without registering.)

Mirror Your Computer’s Screen on Your TV With Google’s Chromecast

While this is a popular way to do screen mirroring, it does use WiFi (not very secure with Chromecast or any streaming device) and it uses a router as a hub. This introdcus lag and delays into the screen image. Not a problem for static content, but video quality will suffer.

I prefer Miracast or Wireless HDMI. Bluetooth can also be used, but it has bandwidth retrictions. One of these two technologies will work on any PC and on many other devices. Both can be made secure and are direct device to device.

MICROSOFT POWERSHELL NOW AVAILABLE TO USERS ON LINUX AND MAC OS X SYSTEMS

I don't understand why on earth anyone other than an app Developer would ever want to do such a thing as run Windows PowerShell on Linux or Mac. This seems to be the height of nonsense, even eclipsing trying to run Linus GUI Apps on a Windows PC. PowerShell does nothing for Linus which the Linux Command Line doesn't already do.

Microsoft tells devs: Whatever you're doing in Linux, Windows 10 will soon do it too

Doubt it. And the point about Linux is not that it does anything Windows doesn't do. The point is, you the end user can control what your Linux PC does and how it does it. Especially regarding privacy and security. And often, by its ature and history, Linux is quicker, more agile and uses disk space more efficiently than Windows. It also doesn't fragment files, so disk wear and maintenance are less of a problem. But SSDs under Linux still need to do TRIM every so often. Ubuntu schedules this by default.

Review of Avira Free Security Suite for Windows PC

I already gave my viewpoint of Avira Free, and referred to Neil Rubenking's take on this product. I don't like the Windows Club site. This and other articles there read too much like canned advertising copy from the publisher. There's only one sentence critical of anything about Avira Free in the whole article, which is way different from Rubenking's take on this product. I use Avira, but I am not a cheerleader for this product. It's adequate and has less of a reputation for spying on users than AVG and Avast (which are going to be owned by the same company soon).

Sorry folks, it's back up to its original price as of this afternoon. But still pretty cheap, considering what it is and what it can do.

How to Create Family Profiles with Eero to Limit Internet Access

From what I've read, Google and possibly Amazon do not offer nearly as good a scheme for keeping Family Accounts separate from individual accounts. and nobody's perfect on this score.

Griffin BreakSafe Magnetic USB-C Power Cable review

For a PC operating in a high-traffic location, the cost of this adapter may be well worth it. Far better than wrecking a port or the whole PC and possibly other attached items, like (extreme case) your HDTV.

Q. Is Data Safe in Sleep/Standby/Suspend Mode?

I saw the risks in person a couple of years ago when my sister was visiting at the old house, and I switched off the power strip her laptop was using to stay in Suspend mode. I have yet to hear the end of that argument.

How to Fix Windows Update When It Gets Stuck

In spite of using Metered Connection and WuShowHide to block driver updates before MS Updates can automatically download them, last weekend I got a driver update which listed below the Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Pro on my laptop. This turned out to mean that this update would be offered even in spite of my setting not to ever get a driver update through Microsoft Updates. (Once again, MS is not respecting explicit settings in Windows 10.) So naturally, this update when it downloaded, failed and stalled, causing the CU to fail to install (though it did download).

I went to the Microsoft Updates Catalog in Internet Explorer 11 (though -- see below -- I could have used any of the major web browsers) and downloaded the manual stand alone update for my configuration. (Win 10 v.1607, 64-bits.) I also opened up Manage my PC, went to Device Manager, clicked on the Pointing Devices, found the Device (Touchpad -- long unused on this laptop) and ran Update Driver Software with Search Online (search MS Updates for the driver). The driver updated through the Device Manager. Now the problem was, had the CU begun its install routine, or was it safe to restart the laptop? I restarted, knowing I had a System Restore point and the stand alone installer for the CU to fall back on, plus a fairly recent System Image archive which tests good.

The restart took nearly a half-hour going down, and ten minutes starting up. Then I ran MS Updates again, and the driver update was gone from the current list. The CU finished installing (it was already downloaded) and another restart was called for. The downloaded stand alone installer never needed to be used. Again, the restart took a half-hour going down and ten minutes coming up, but everything lists as successfully installed now.

Take Home Lesson -- if a driver lists in WuShowHide below any other type of update, HIDE it immediately and use the Device Manager if there appears to be a security reason to get the updated driver. Better yet, go to the manufacturer (if the device is still supported) and get the updated driver from there. I would have saved a half a day's work and grief if I had known to do this.

(See Below for how to get updates through the MS Updates Catalog.)
