Malwarebytes 3.0 Review and New Features: Anti-malware for Windows PC

This is about their paid version. The free version doesn't have the active features. And I am not aware of Version 3 yet being available as a free version. Anti-Exploit is available free as a stand alone.

Comcast cable costs jump $48 per year, thanks to increased fees

Some of these fees are required by law, and the increase may be larger in some communities where there are additional taxes, which are also going up.

Amazon customers are warned of a scam email that aims to get their bank card details: Here's how to stay safe

This is UK (England). But some of the same precautions apply here in the US.

Save Emails to PDF With This Chrome Extension

With both yahoo and GMail, you can print any email and one option (at least in my Linux) is Print To PDF. Then open and edit in a PDF Editor program (like my Master PDF 3). Problem solved without any more extensions to slow down your browser.

Re. FYI#800 (Fri 12/16/2016)

Lots on software and OS updates!

CCleaner 5.25 Now Available for Download

CCleaner has a new version about every week or so, so the version number is already obsolete by the time we read this.

Opera 42 Now Available for Download

Again, there are frequent updates, and even more frequent updates to components like Flash plugins. Best policy -- update security daily, update browsers and components weekly, and update other critical software once or twice monthly. And update Windows monthly, but not on Patch Tuesday if you know how to avoid this. Wait a week or two on anything not super-critical (in other words, on everything). I use an updates checker (not a security updates checker) to keep posted on what's available at any given time.

Windows update knocks out internet connections

It's times like this that I'm glad I routinely put off the current MS Updates for Windows for a couple of weeks.

Apple engineer reveals the real reason Steve Jobs didn’t allow Flash on the iPhone

I have to agree that Adobe does everything in its power to make itself look arrogant and stupid when it comes to security. It's not just about Flash.

Linux's 'big' 4.9 release adds support for Raspberry Pi Zero, LG Nexus 5

I would wait awhile before upgrading, to see what this upgrade breaks and how loudly people scream about it.

(And on Pay TV options)

How to Check Your Comcast Data Usage to Avoid Going Over the 1TB Cap

What is anyone doing which routinely goes over a 1 TB per month data usage cap?

A New Choice for Cord Cutters: DirecTV Now

Not much of a choice. Counts against data caps on land lines, requires installation of a satellite dish, and only has 100 channels, none of which stream reliably. No local channels either. By missing their deadlines repeatedly on Gigabit Internet over Power Lines, AT&T has effectively removed themselves from the Pay TV and consumer Internet arena in the Chicago area. I will be switching to Comcast at the earliest possible time.

Yahoo Breach

This is indeed a radical approach, and not one I would recommend. Although I am no fan of the current state of Yahoo services, I would not close my longest-standing email account just because Yahoo was very delinquent about security three years ago when Marissa Mayer ran the place. Maybe Verizon will do a better job -- or sell the operations to someone who will take security seriously.

How to save and sync your passwords for free

While LastPass is a nice password manager to use, its browser dependency troubles me. There are independent cross platform free alternatives like KeepassX which are also capable of cloud storage of their databases and syncing.

Can tech help San Francisco's homeless?
Believe it or not, not everyone can ever get good enough at programming to make a living doing it. This is yet another myth of technology -- that everybody can learn to do everything well enough to be paid to do it. App Development has been oversold in a similar way. Chances are, if a person has been homeless for more than a few weeks, they will not succeed in holding down viable employment. Period.

This is WiFi, not Bluetooth. I use Bluetooth because I live in an apartment with a busy WiFi environment. So any 2.4 GHz signals are vulnerable to interception by my neighbors.

Re. FYI #795 (Fri 12/11/2016)

The Best PDF Readers for Windows

While Nitro PDF does all I need under Windows, I really don't like the way Windows PDF editors handle single-image PDFs. The more easily editable PDF Forms are not a single image.

When faced with a single-image PDF, I immediately fire up Ubuntu Linux and start in with Master PDF 3, Free Edition for Linux. It's got a lot more powerful tools and much more accurate text editing than anything free I've found for Windows.

If combining PDF files, or taking out pages, PDF Shuffler (Linux) or the Windows version of PDF SAM work fine. If a PDF needs to have a chart or an image inserted, LibreOffice Draw under Linux works faster and more accurately for me than its Windows counterpart.

Paid Windows PDF editors are fine, but for the price (free, but with a learning curve) it was well worth it to learn to do this in Linux. For this and printing from PDF documents, nothing I've seen in Windows for free can touch the Linux options. In fact, when printing from Web downloads like bank ledgers, order forms and invoices and utility bill images, I find Linux tools to be far better than free Windows tools.

I don't do PDF to Word or OCR to Text, so I can't evaluate these options.

How to get rid of image burn-in on an LCD display

I've never seen a LCD with image burn-in. This used to be a problem with CRTs back in the day, but LCDs haven't presented me with this issue.

Can You Delete Yourself From The Internet?

Not in North America. In Britain and the EU, by law you can do this, but these laws are easily thwarted. In practice, once something is on the Web, it's going to show up forever. Not necessarily in searches, but it's still out there. And in there when people have downloaded and made copies of it. Just ask any of the many actresses and models who've done regrettable things early in their careers (one of whom will soon be our First Lady) how difficult it is to fully erase all "copies" of something embarrassing from the Internet. And suing people over this sort of stuff only makes the embarrassments more visible to more people.

How to Prevent Windows from Automatically Updating Specific Drivers

The WuShowHide Tool can also be used with Metered Connection (for a wireless connection) pre-emptively to block driver updates. Also, the setup of Windows 10 allows Windows Updates to be set to Never Update Drivers. But this has not stopped WU from trying to update drivers on my PCs if the driver updates were deemed to be Security Updates. Again, wushowhide is your friend.

This is a lot easier than messing with Group Policy and driver Hardware ID Lists every time there might be a driver update you really need or want. When wushowhide has hidden driver updates from Windows Updates, the Windows Device Manager can still Update a Driver in the usual ways, fetching it from Microsoft or the manufacturer as needed.
