Why You Still Need a Land Line

http://www.foxnews.com/tech/2017/03/09/at-t-911-service-restored-after-brief-outage.html

http://abcnews.go.com/US/att-reports-911-outage-wireless-customers-states/story?id=46007484

What stand out are two facts: First, the outage was much less widespread and lasted much less time than was originally reported. Second, if you had Cable or AT&T (formerly U_Verse) with home phone services, you had an alternative. Only Direct TV Bundle and AT&T Wireless customers with no land lines (and "cord cutters" without even Cable TV lines) had no alternatives.

Also note that Text Services (SMS) to 911 (where available) were not affected.

In disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes or tornadoes, cell phone service can completely fail, either through massive overloads of the cell networks, or through severe and widespread damages to cell towers and other infrastructure. These outages can go on for days. In such cases, land lines have a better track record of surviving or being restored more quickly than cell services.

Just something to consider if you think you can survive without some sort of wired telephone services. Pending legislation in Illinois would remove the mandate to maintain universal land line coverage. Something to think about and do something about ASAP.

I am not posting this for political reasons -- this is a personal and public safety issue.

Firefox 52 bans plug-ins, supports 'game changer' standard

http://www.computerworld.com/article/3177975/web-browsers/firefox-52-bans-plug-ins-supports-game-changer-standard.html

Firefox sets kill-Flash schedule

http://www.computerworld.com/article/3098606/web-browsers/firefox-sets-kill-flash-schedule.html

This follows Google Chrome's moves to do the same in Chrome 57:

Google removes Plugin controls from Chrome

http://www.ghacks.net/2017/01/29/google-removes-plugin-controls-from-chrome/

(This is not entirely true. I have found several little icons in or near the Chrome 57 URL Bar which do allow controls over plugins on a per-page basis. This includes allowing or now allowing Flash Player content. And Flash Player has its own special Content setting under Advanced Settings >> Privacy .)

Google plans to start blocking Flash in Chrome this year [2016]

http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/15/11679394/chrome-to-block-flash-later-2016

Some sites are still Flash dependent, but these are getting to be fewer and fewer.

Re. FYI #851 (Sun 3/5/2017):

Your internet speeds will be insanely fast when 5G arrives

This is Cell Data -- imagine how fast you will burn through the 22GB 5G data caps! (Actually, these caps may rise dramatically, as 5G can carry a lot more simultaneous data.) BTW, for home Internet over the wire, Comcast already does offer 1 Gbit/sec Internet in limited areas. AT&T is expected to follow suit. Google, AT&T and others are getting Millimeter Wave Internet into a few select cities already. And no, this new tech will not come cheaply.

This affordable accessory protects your webcam from prying eyes

Web Cam covers at $10.00 apiece. You can get a lot of post-its for that price! My NUC doesn't have a web cam, but my tablet does. I choose not to cover the tablet webcam, as it usually only gets used when I'm not doing anything sensitive.

Security error leaves NY airport servers unprotected for a year

Sounds a lot like that spam operation which got busted in a very similar way.

You Want Faster and Safer Internet?

I have OpenDNS enabled for IPv4 and IPv6 on my tabelt and my NUC for Widnows and (on the NUC) Linux. No problems, and it generally works a lot better and faster than the ISP provided DNS for AT&T services.

How to Make All Your PC Times Match With an Atomic Clock Sync

One place where time sync is important is when making a backup of a system which is out of sync. This can result in time-date stamps on some files being way off, even if there's no BIOS or CMOS battery issue. When backing up with CloneZilla for Linux, the program objects to these errors, and asks if I want to change the system time to a more reasonable value. I say No, but wonder if this affects restore ability down the road. (So far, I ahve yet to see a Linux CloneZilla restore fail for this reason. Other reasons yes, but not for time sync reasons.

No internet, secured – Fix Windows 10 WiFi error

The easiest and often the most effective way to solve this temporary Windows 10 issue is to shut down the system and restart it. This refreshes rthe entire Networking Stack and usually resets the IP Address. Then most of the time it's clear sailing again.

You can make Windows 10 act like Windows RT with the Creators Update

And I would want to voluntarily do this...Why?

Why You Should Use a Vertical Windows Taskbar

I do this in Linux with the Unity Desktop, but without a true Launcher feature, in Windows this has never made much sense to me. Back in the day, Windows XP had the Office Sidebar, which also acted as a Quick Launcher. In Windows 10 I simply use Quick Access, most often from File Explorer. Also, All Apps from the Start Menu. But not a vertical Task Bar.

Check Out This Free Windows Clone

These folks have been successfully sued by Microsoft a few years back for Reverse Engineering Windows components. I don't expect this OS to ever emerge from Beta.

Windows 10 Will Let You Snooze Creators Update

You can also actually defer this and other "feature upgrades" in at least the Pro edition.

Google helps put aging SHA-1 encryption out to pasture

I've had this and TLS1 disabled everywhere I can, for a couple of years now. No problems so far with any web content or email downloads.

What a Linux Desktop Does Better

The main thing my Unity Desktop doesn't do that my Windows 10 desktop does do, is crash File Explorer every time a file is updated. That's the Windows 10 Shell Extensions Bug, supposedly addressed in the Creators Update. I generally find Ubuntu Desktop and its Desktop GUI to be more stable than Windows, except on weird graphics configurations like my old laptop with hybrid Intel-NVidia graphics. That config. would regularly crash Unity badly. I find Linux security issues to be understated in this article.

Re. FYI #852 (Mon 3/6/2017):

What is a Sandbox? Free Sandboxing software for Windows 10 PC

Software virtualization, especially for browsers, has been entering the mainstream of Windows computing for awhile now. Most of us probably have at least some of this and don't even notice it. This is different from the approach of tools like EMET, which rely on rules and permissions restrictions to keep software from going rogue. Both approaches are applicable to today's threat environment. (EMET itself seems to be going away in favor of Group Policies. Linux uses something like this in its AppArmor toolset.)

Uber devises secret Greyball tool to evade officials

Why wouldn't an illegal and unregulated company use illegal and unregulated apps to continue its "business model". Read or listen to Chicago area news, and you will long for the "corrupt regulations" of the taxi industry. Some Uber drivers and imposters are having a field day. Then there's the viral video of Uber's CEO and one of his drivers having a "discussion" about the realities of being an Uber driver. Truly eye-opening.

Spammers expose their entire operation through bad backups

http://www.csoonline.com/article/3176433/security/spammers-expose-their-entire-operation-through-bad-backups.html

They weren't hacked -- they accidentally exposed their entire database to the world. Somehow, their backup process went haywire. Incompetence in a grey-market organization -- who would have thought it? (sarcasm)

"Salted Hash reached out to all of the providers and shared the scripts and notes exposed by the data breach."

So it appears that all the affected sites and services have been notified of potential exposures of their customers' data through this breach.

Woody Leonhard ranks this accident as exposing "1.37 billion (with a “b”) leaked records".

https://www.askwoody.com/2017/world-class-spamming-operation-river-city-media-exposes-their-own-data-with-bad-backups/

Sites or services involved may include HipChat and possibly Skype. Many other details in the article indicate that ads were also involved (but this is not unique to this particular operation).

This is a spam operation (possibly criminal), so people were tricked into giving up their email addresses (usually without passwords) and maybe some other personal information, in hopes of getting something for nothing. Some shady tactics, but many people appear to have been fooled. How many passwords, and how much other information was leaked, has not yet been determined.

If you have a Skype or HipChat account, it would be wise to change your passwords ASAP. Other affected sites and services will presumably be on their own about notifying affected users.

More to come in coming days and weeks, the story says.

This is just one operation. There are probably many, many more. Their records no doubt overlap, and are not vetted to make sure these records only include actual live email addresses. But the extent of this operation shows how widespread criminal spamming and email harvesting is on the Internet and the Web. And how many people fall for fake ads, promises of free stuff, and other social engineering tactics.

How YouTube TV will kill cable

http://www.computerworld.com/article/3176776/web-apps/how-youtube-tv-will-kill-cable.html

Read these highlights (and the entire article) and judge for yourself.

"Google did not specify which cities or when rollouts would occur, but it hardly matters. U.S. residents can sign up immediately even if they live outside one of the designated cities. Simply choose one of the markets where YouTube TV is available. Local programming will be from that market, not yours."

"A superficial glance at YouTube TV could make you shrug with indifference. It costs $35 per month for a family plan of six accounts and is set to begin broadcasting 40 channels starting in a few months."

"YouTube TV seems like it's half as good as a cable subscription. It's roughly half the cost, and you get roughly half the stations and half the commercials as with the most basic cable subscription."

Then they make the entire Cord Cutters argument, not much more effectively.

Judge for yourself. But to me, this does not look like a replacement for Cable. Period.

Google and YouTube will have to step up their game enormously before they can offer anything which in my view compares even roughly with Cable. I don't consider even AT&T's DirectTV to be even roughly comparable to Cable, even if the weather is good. And their online streaming service is a bad joke.

Google will do a lot better to invest their time and energies into rolling out Google Fiber or Fiber Plus Wireless Gigabit services more rapidly and in more cities. This latest offering is in no way going to compete with, let alone kill off, Cable.
