Microsoft sets May 9 as original Windows 10's retirement date

Version 1507, the mid-2015 debut release, disappears from the patching list; next up, 1511, will likely follow in early October (to see what version you have, hold down the Windows key and tap R and release all keys.  Key in the Run box, WINVER and if it says 1507 at the top left, update to a more recent version.  For 1511, be looking to upgrade as soon as you can.  As always for such major upgrades, do a verified image backup of the whole drive.)

Re. FYI #885 (Sat 4/8/17):

Sony unveils SD cards so fast, they’ve bumped up against interface speed limits

It is generally better to use media which can handle faster speeds than the interface, rather than the other way around. Too much data too fast can wreck storage media permanently.

Plex Adds Cloud Storage As Alternative to Dedicated Server

"Cloud DVR" is fast becoming a trend. Comcast where I'll be living had Cloud DVR. It allows limited features and playback of the past 60 hours of programming, even if it was not originally recorded to the in-home DVR. This may not apply to local broadcast channels. Verizon Fios may alsobe doing something similar, but Comcast is way ahead of them (which is one big reason I am putting up with Comcast's higher prices and fees.) Plex is just adapting to this trend.

Should I Defragment My SSD or USB Flash Drives?

It's not defragmenting, but an occasional run of Trim should help with garbage collection and help prevent the slowdowns which SSDs are prone to as they get filled up. Windows and Linux do this routine on a schedule, usually every 30 days. Only if you do frequent program changes would Trim need to be run more frequently. Where applicable, Trim runs per-partition. I would not use Trim on a Recovery or EFI Boot partition.

Explained: Do I need a Third Party Firewall?

I think Windows since Windows 7 has had an adequate firewall. It's you route which could use a better firewall, and it should have one and have it enabled.

Re. FYI #886 (Sun 4/9/17):

Microsoft's new Surface Pro might just be a minor refresh with Kaby Lake

If you want to call Kaby Lake a minor refresh, that's OK with me. But remember, these new chips only run Windows 10, nothing else. Maybe not even Linux.

Is PNG On The Way Out?

What's happening in these cases is conversion on the fly, which could not be done seamlessly just a few years ago. Browsers and web sites can "optimize" images to take up the least amount of space or the least bandwidth when downloading and especially when uploading.

Since JPEG is not lossless, it can permanently reduce image clarity and sharpness to do this conversion. Users of some Cloud Storage services have complained about this.

Google Drive compresses (Zips) folders and files when downloading them. The image formats are not converted in that case. So image quality generally does not suffer as much.

Should you buy a UPS battery backup for your PC or server?

Where I live now, we have brownouts and blackouts as soon as thunderstorm season comes up. The answer is a no-brainer -- YES!! I have one in almost every room. Two by the media console.

Quirky PC Behavior? Check The Clock

And for dual-booting, check BOTH System Clocks and Time Zone Setups.

Should I Put My Hot Laptop In The Fridge?

I would think cleaning its vents and checking its fan(s) would be a better approach. But some of these things do run hot. Over-cooling or sudden cooling can be very damaging, including the posssibility of moisture condensation inside the case.
