How to upgrade your system BIOS using FreeDOS

Upgrading your BIOS can seem tricky for free software users, but it doesn't have to be.

https://opensource.com/article/17/6/upgrade-bios-freedos?sc_cid=70160000000gz65AAA

With my Intel NUC mini-PC, I found that there was very little information actually revealed from the BIOS. It's the firmware which gets updated these days, more often than the BIOS.

Need a phone until the new iPhone release? This model is under $200 right now

https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/reviewedcom/2017/06/01/need-a-phone-until-the-new-iphone-release-this-model-is-under-200-right-now/102394168/#

If I didn't have a working Moto G4, this would be my choice for a smartphone. Be aware there have been hardware issues with the Moto smartphones. Mostly with the E series, but the G series has not been immune. Power buttons have failed, and some phones mysteriously stopped making calls. But on the plus side, these phones use stock Android firmware, so can be upgraded almost without limits. Mine's on Android N and it probably can take on Android O when Motorola offers it.

Here's Which Android Phones Get Regular Security Updates

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/android-security-update-list,news-25221.html?utm_source=tg-newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20170603-tg

This list is incomplete. Moto G and recent E series phones also get regular security updates. Other manufacturers are also under-represented in this list.

Phablets are the Future of Smartphones

Unless you call a five or six inch screen a tablet size, I don't see folks carrying around anything bigger in their pockets. Or onboard airliners.

How to Enable Chrome Extensions in Incognito Mode

https://www.maketecheasier.com/enable-chrome-extensions-incognito-mode/

This is not a good practice if you want maximum privacy. Many apps and extensions, once enabled, put out beacons or trackers, which goes against the purpose of going Incognito in the firtst place.

Missing A Message? Check Your Focused Inbox

http://www.worldstart.com/missing-a-message-check-your-focused-inbox/print

I hate when things are too automatic. This is one more example in my opinion.

How to See Other Devices Logged in to Your Google Account

https://www.howtogeek.com/279518/how-to-see-other-devices-logged-in-to-your-google-account/

Staying logged in when away from a device for more than a few minutes is not a good security practice. This page should not be needed. The device history is useful, however, to see what and who ahs logged in over some period of time. This can provide an early warning of account or password compromises.

14 High-Tech Cities You'll Want to Call Home

Using Android? These are the most secure phones according to Google

https://www.yahoo.com/tech/using-android-most-secure-phones-111702621.html

This list looks suspiciously similar to the list used in the article about smartphones which receive regulaer security updates. Again, the list is very incomplete.

SECURITY NEWS THIS WEEK: MICROSOFT’S PATCHING OLD VERSIONS OF WINDOWS BECAUSE THINGS ARE THAT BAD

https://www.wired.com/story/microsoft-windows-xp-security-patch/

What's this bad is that folks are not upgrading to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 and 10s. If Microsoft could see the error of their ways and produce new versions which people actually *want* these issues with older versions would largely go away. Third party business apps would be upgraded if folks were demanding compatibility with newer Windows versions.
