FYI #993 (Tue 8/8/2017):

How to View and Delete Your Google Maps History on Android and iPhone

I'll have to look into doing this when I get a bit more time. There are things in my Google Maps History (if I have one) which I would like to get out of there. And turning off the history as much as is practical might be worth considering.

This sleek Windows 10 PC is the size of a small external hard drive

This device has all the characteristics of a tablet, without the battery or touchscreen, and no keyboard dock. And for the class of processor, etc., about the same price as a tablet. I think I'd rather get a tablet.

Apple has invented a way to secretly call 911 using your ...

Depending on how unusualy the fingerprint to 911 method is, I think this is a bad idea. Too many accidental emergency calls could result.

How to Switch to a Microsoft Account from a Local Account in Windows 10

I haven't had many occasions to want to go this direction. Almost always I go from Microsoft Cloud Account to Local Account.

I bought my last laptop straight from Microsoft — and you should too

My ASUS tablet was bought from the Microsoft Store. That has worked out very well so far.

Black Bird Cleaner Free review

So, it does less than CCleaner, and there is no price difference. Maybe a bit lighter on suystem resources, but if you disable CCleaner's monitoring mode, that's also a non-issue. Why would anyone want to switch?

The Best Tablets of 2017

I did notice that ASUS Transformer Book's latest edition is still recommended. Good to see.

How to Stop Pop-Ups in Chrome

This is a start, but it does not stop all kinds of popups and related annoyances. I also have extensions for stopping GIFs, stopping autoplay, stopping Flash objects and stopping overlay ads. There's a lot more to stopping these annoyances than any one setting seems able to handle. If totally frustrated, also try stopping all scripts, then enabling only those scripts needed to get done what you came to the site for. Very tedious!

How to Convince Yourself to Go on Longer Walks

It does help to have a destination in mind. But when the weather is a factor, there has to be somewhere to be or get inside at least for awhile. Knowing you won't get frostbite helps a lot with winter motivation.

Re. FYI #994 (Wed 8/9/2017):

Are you willingly handing over your personal data? Don't make this Wi-Fi mistake

A paid VPN will help a lot with these risks, but it still will not necessarily foil all attempts to steal or harvest your personal information on a public WiFi network.

Protect IoT Devices from Malware and Hacking using Bitdefender BOX

So the corporate solution of using a security appliance with a subscription finally comes to home IoT networks. It's about time. BTW, a BitDefender subscription also will include antivirus for your mobile devices, when you are not on your home network. Last I read, there is no additional charge.

29 Hidden Chrome Features That Will Make Your Life Easier

There's always something new to learn about Chrome.

BTW, when my Chrome Beta in Linux got its last update, the entire Chrome display (browser windows and Chrome theme and menus, even for extensions) went very dark. I had to restart the PC to correct this. I suspect the offending changes were in the Linux gtk settings. The restart put things back in order.

Why Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality are the same thing

No they're not the same thing. Same class of things, but different concepts. We need to keep our tech terms straight. Including just what an upgrade is, as opposed to an update. (Hint: Feature Updates are generally upgrades, while cumulative updates are still updates, even though they may be large and cover a gamut of issues.)

Microsoft, Lenovo to Ship Sub-$300 Windows 10 S Notebooks

And probably none of them will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, and their processors will be inelegible for any updates after a couple of years.

Guide to Linux app for Android

Now why would I want a Linux guide on my Android phone? Maybe for those rare occasions when something I did caused Linux not to boot. But otherwise?

Lenovo Miix 320 review: Portable sidekicks don't come much cheaper than $200

USB-A 3.0 can be adapted to USB-C 3.0 with a simple adapter. Speed will be the same as if everything wwere USB 3.0.

800p on the screen is a bit grainy. Screen brightness is an issue, according to the review.

A single 2 MP camera is nothing to write home about.

"Keeping the starting $200 price in mind, what Lenovo has packed into the Miix 320 is pretty impressive" That pretty much sums up my impression of this 2-in-1. The current generation of ASUS Transformer Book is a bit more money at $400.00, but it really does not do very much more, and has less onboard storage. I'd probably consider the Lenovo alongside the ASUS, but I'd end up buying the ASUS, especially if the Microsoft Store had a Signature Edition available. Both devices probably will only be able to receive Windows upgrades (Feature Updates) through about the next two years.

Google Analytics adds voice-based navigation

This feature has shown up on my Android smartphone. I haven't used it yet.

Where to report Scams, Phishing and Spam?

I hate to say this, but you won't be doing much more than wasting your time. Reporting does not stop these nasty things. But I suppose you could be adding new warnings to the flood we see lalready every day.

20 things you should never, ever google

Yeah, a few of those items have occasionally made my day in the worst ways.

A look at Stacer system optimizer for GNU/Linux

I installed this utility, and it looks like the Windows Task Manager from Windows 10. It has a nice uninstaller, can show processes like Process Explorer, and puts a lot of system monitoring applets all under one roof. System Cleanup is nowhere near as powerful as Bleachbit with the GUI version, but other features are not found in a GUI version elsewhere that I have yet see. The DEB installer downloaded easily and ran smoothly in the GNOME Software Installer in Ubuntu 16.04. Great Linux system utility!

August’s insanely popular smart lock is even smarter when it’s discounted on Amazon

http://bgr.com/2017/08/09/august-smart-lock-amazon-discount-price/

Rumor has it that Best Buy has an even better deal on this lock, but it is intriguing. As for security, there are likely some risks, but conventional deadbolt locks can also be defeated.

Consumer Reports pulls Microsoft Surface recommendation, citing high breakage rates

https://techcrunch.com/2017/08/10/consumer-reports-pulls-microsoft-surface-recommendation-citing-high-breakage-rates/

Given that these devices also are not serviceable (can't be opened for service), I think consumers should be very wary of any and all Microsoft Surface models. Maybe just use the rent/lease model and hope for the best?

FCC wants mobile data to count as broadband internet

The idea would further cut off poor and rural areas from decent internet, say critics.

https://www.engadget.com/2017/08/10/fcc-mobile-data-as-broadband-slower-speeds/

Videoconferencing is included in the complaints about this proposal. Videoconferencing in Full-HD (1080p @ 60fps) uses 2 MBPS per stream, or a minimum of 4MBPS (above the proposed lower limit) upstream for two participants. 4k Video or additional participants will magnify the issue greatly. Realistically, most home users would be within current Skype HD limits, for which 3MBPS will allow two-way video calling at Skype HD resolutions today, but will not allow for any future expansion or multiple participants. Given that cell service available bandwidth can vary widely under different local conditions (geography, number of customers connecting, terrain, network issues), the new rules would fail any test of reasonableness. This is not what is meant by true broadband!

Re.

FYI #992 (Mon 8/7/2017):

New System Predicted Tornadoes Hours, Not Minutes, Ahead

In Oklahoma City a few nights ago, no sirens went off. People reported receiving reverse-911 calls, but too late to take cover. Predicting storms is one thing -- getting the word out in the middle of the night is an entirely different matter.

Your passwords are probably a lot worse than you think

Even without using online tools, I seem to be able to think up passwords which I can remember, but they check out with analyzer tools as very strong. I don't know how I do it while others fail, but maybe that's just me.

How to keep Ubuntu desktops and servers running clean

Unless I really mess up something,or try and remove several packages to address an issue, I do not clean up Ubuntu using third-party utilities. Once recently, the Ubuntu Updater decided to make me do a partial upgrade to repair damages left over from my experiments. And occasionally the Updater will not finish or will not run. Then I use Bleachbit, and if necessary, run it as Root. The utility comes in a GUI form with its own shortcut which can be dragged to the Ubuntu Launcher panel.

Just don't overuse cleaners in Ubuntu -- it's not like Windows, which does accumulate a lot of uncollected trash. Linux does not do that unless you are really messing with something. Sometimes those system caches and logs are needed to document and troubleshoot an issue.

https://www.techhive.com/article/3214464/speakers/how-to-prevent-your-google-home-or-amazon-echo-from-making-unwanted-online-purchases.html

So, there is a code which can be set up with the Amazon Echo. Why Googler Home doesn't have this feature is beyond my comprehension. Anyway, Mute is most useful when there are kids coming over. They do love to amuse themselves by summoning these virtual assistants.

Avast acquires Piriform, makers of CCleaner

I won't be worried about any implications of this acquisition. As long as CCleaner remains free, and as long as it still does its job, who owns the company is of little concern to me. After all, CCleaner is not a security product.

Skype now lets you send money to friends via PayPal on Android and iOS

I also won't be worried about this feature, as I won't be using it. But I would rate Skype, owned by Microsoft, as reasonably safe with money handling and security.

FBI arrests WannaCry's 'accidental hero' in connection with Kronos banking trojan

I hate to be cynical, but I thought this guy might be a hacker just like the bad ones. And that he might pull off something dark like this.

How to Manage Files and Use the File System on Android

I've looked into the files and folders on my Android phone, but never felt any need to directly address files through the file system. I find other backup methods which use apps, the Cloud and transfers to a PC to be able to work just fine without messing around with the Android File System directly.

Microsoft’s ‘Surface Plus’ Offers PC Upgrades Every 18 Months

If you're going to mess with chipsets as cheap as the Core-m3, you'd better be thinking of upgrading your hardware every 18 months or less. That's the way Microsoft is going these days with the OS updates and "retiring" chipsets from receiving feature upgrades these days.

Windows 10: less downtime during feature upgrades

The real problem with "downtime" these days comes from the ever-growing sizes of the Cumulative Updates. The process of updating, now up to two cycles per month, has wasted almost as much of my time each round as a major upgrade used to take.

Trojan found pre-installed on Android phones being sold on Amazon

Updates are essential. But oh wait…

It appears that users affected by this malware were buying cheap Chinese-made smartphones on Amazon or in the Amazon Marketplace. The moral of the story is obvious -- don't buy no-name merchandise from the Amazon Marketplace just because it's cheap. Cheap stuff can in the end prove quite costly.

From my own reading:

The 10 Windows group policy settings you need to get right

Configure these 10 group policy settings carefully, and enjoy better Windows security across the office

http://www.csoonline.com/article/3212948/windows/the-10-windows-group-policy-settings-you-need-to-get-right.html

This is aimed more at Enterprise Administrators than at Home Users with Windows 10 Pro, but a lot of the advice in this article can be readily adapted to make our own Windows PCs and Home Networks more secure.

One thing to note -- starting with the Fall Creators Update, Windows Passwords in all editions will have an expiration date. This does not apply to accounts set up as Microsoft Accounts where there is a login tied to the online Microsoft Account. So if you don't want to get locked out of your local user accounts, make sure you change this Group Policy to Never Expire for a personal PC. Especially a local Administrator Account with Password Login. For the Home Edition, you will need to edit the Registry to approximate this Group Policy.

FYI #989 (Fri 8/4/2017):

How to convert PDFs to Word documents

Foxit Reader does NOT convert PDF to Word. This feature requires the paid Foxit Phantom program.

https://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf-editor/

The article converts the PDF to text first, which loses all formatting. Recreating the formatting later is not supported, and would be more trouble than it is worth to perform by hand. I would hate to have to recreate a heavily formatted PDF single-image file this way! (BTW, the free Foxit Reader also does not do OCR.)

The other program (UniPDF) is something I have never used, but it looks like it is totally free, and says it does do conversions to Word .doc format, but not to Word .docx format.

Neither program will do anything with encrypted or password-protected PDF files.

Why You Should Use a Vertical Windows Taskbar

Windows 95 used to have with Office a vertical taskbar or launcher. My Linux with the Unity Desktop has a vertical Launcher and a taskbar at the top of the screen. Frankly, I find that there are times when vertical is better, and times when horizontal is better. It is said (although I cannot confirm this on my own) that tablets with touch-only screens and no keyboards work better with a vertical taskbar. Otherwise, I cannot agree with the case made here. Use what feels best for you.

BTW, web browsers and other applications will not have their tabs or menus on the sides, non matter what you do. You can get extensions which will put tabs into a tree (drop-down menu) or a sidebar, but true vertical tabs have never been developed to my knowledge. Which shows that most people do not want their tabs on the side. And most people do not want their taskbar on the side, although a program or app launcher over there works well.

Best indoor digital TV antennas: Our top picks for cord cutters

I disagree that you need a fancy antenna to receive OTA broadcast TV signals. If you can't get clear, consistent signals with a $40.00 antenna, going up to a $240.00 antenna will not get you better results. You are just out of luck if your location blocks signals.

Policy Plus brings Group Policy to all Windows editions

This is a misleading product. Windows 10 Home Editions ignore GPO settings. The Registry Settings are not available to implement many GPOs in the Home Edition, and many Snap-ins are not present in the Home Edition. If you want Pro features, get the Pro Upgrade.

The How to Force Windows to Show All Your Drives in File Explorer

This is one truly useful feature I did not know about. I don't have any devices which behave like this, but it's good to know how to fix the issue if it ever arises. BTW, Linux also does not show (or even mount) inactive devices.

I Enabled Two-Factor Authentication and Now My Email Program Can’t Log In

Even without two-factor logins, I have had to set up an App Password for my Fastmail account in my Claws Mail desktop email client. It's a bit jarring to have to do the first time, but once I did it, all else behaved normally. I find it interesting that Thunderbird does support 2-factor authentication without an App Password.

GIMPHOTO: Free Photoshop alternative Photo and Image Editor software for Windows 10

There does not appear to be current development going on in this project. Its Linux development ended in 2011, and there hasn't been an update for Windows since 2015.

How to use Miracast to mirror your device's screen wirelessly on your TV—even 4K

I don't care about 4k, but Miracast does seem to work well in my experience. However, there's no Miracast for Linux, so I'm out in the cold. Currently, I am connected to my monitor with just the old-fashioned HDMI cable.

A look at I-Nex – a CPU-Z like Application for GNU/Linux

Don't ignore weird clicking noises coming from your PC

This does not just apply to PCs. DVRs have hard drives, and if they start clicking, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise someday when you want to watch a saved show. My TiVo Roamio OTA may be starting to do this sort of thing.

Your video streaming gadget could be SPYING!

This is not about most streaming devices (Chromecast, Roku, Amazon Fire) or Smart TVs. It is about some add-ons or Channels you can get for Kodi. These add-ons apparently were allowing illegal access to copyrighted materials in the first place, so what did you expect?

Action Center does not open in Windows 10

Interesting -- I've never seen this happen. But I'll take this site's word on what to do if it ever does happen.

The 13 Best Microsoft Edge Extensions (So Far)

I wasn't aware that Edge even *had* 13 extensions!

How to stream media from your PC to your HDTV over Wi-Fi

The one advantage of using WiDi or Miracast is that it doesn't use your router as an intermediary. These methods do use the router, thus causing Internet bandwidth to be limited. The article does not go into what Miracast is, and how it differs from DLNA and Chromecast. Also not mentioned is the fact that Windows Media Player does not play back commercial DVDs.

VLC Player can play back DVDs. It can also be set up as a DLNA streaming app:

Windows 10 Creators Update not installing

Checking the hardware compatibility and using the Upgrade Assistant are the first two things I would do before trying to upgrade any device to Windows 10 (Spring) Creators Update (v.1703). Also, wait until Windows Update offers the update to you -- don't go out of your way to ask for trouble.

5 Methods to Bypass Blocked Sites

A look at the nano text editor in GNU/Linux

My main contact with Nano is when editing system files from the Linux Terminal, often because those files have only Root access permissions. It's not a very pretty editor for most other uses.

How to Turn On or Off BitLocker for Operating System Drive in Windows 10

one of the most aggravating things a technician ever did to me was when the Microsoft Store turned on Bitlocker on my tablet and did not tell me their password selection. I turned off Bitlocker from that device on the spot.

See who is tracking you online

I've used Lightbeam on my old laptop. But honestly, it's better to block trackers than to identify their family trees.

How to Directly Clean Install Windows 10 without having to Upgrade First

This has nothing to do with updating or upgrading from one version of Windows 10 to the next. The license in Windows 10 is Cloud Based. Once the initial Windows 10 free upgrade was accomplished, the Digital Entitlement resided in every user's online Microsoft Account. So now, doing a Clean Install will not cost money and will no longer cause the vast majority of users any Activation issues. This makes the advice in the article totally out of date. Upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 may no longer be free anyway, no matter how you do the job.
