Software Firm tells Parents to Spy on 'Gay' Sons

The article is correct that it is not illegal (and I think not unethical) for parents or employers (or schools) to put spyware on PCs and devices owned by or within the legitimate responsibility of those who install the spyware. And in the US it is not necessary to inform people when you are spying on them for legitimate reasons. As for spouses spying on each other, if things have gotten to that level, the marriage is effectively over anyway, IMHO.

Creators Update now on nearly 66 percent of Windows 10 PCs, according to AdDuplex

And probably half of those upgrades were to people who never saw it coming, through MS Updates.

How to to copy URLs of all open Tabs in Firefox and Chrome

The first of the two Chrome extensions listed has not been updated since 2011, and has no description in the Chrome Store. The other one has not been updated since 2015. This looks like a retread of a very old article. That said, the second Chrome extension listed does still work. If you want to dig deeper into Chrome's History, there is no way to export it in a readable format. Firefox can do this, but Chrome can't. You can use the Chrome Sync feature and store your current History in the Cloud, then import it later. That's the closest that Chrome can come to exporting and importing its History. The Chrome Cache for visited URLs can also be accessed, but it comes with all sorts of garbage interspersed, so has to be heavily edited to be of any use. The only Chrome Extension which claims to do this task automatically costs money per use.

How Can I Report a Spammer?

You can report spammers and spam domains, but it won't do you or anyone else any good. These folks can be up and running in milliseconds after their spam servers get taken down.

New Study Links Video Games To Brain Damage

If I read this report correctly, it looks like these effects are temporary and heal or even improve hippocampal function after stopping the gaming habits described. More research is needed to see whether this is indeed the case. The take-home lesson is that we need a variety of activities to maintain good brain health. Being too focused on one type of activity is bad in many ways.

The Best Free Alternatives to Microsoft Office

WPS Office (formerly Kingsoft Office) will also work for many folks. It lacks some advanced features of MS Office, but is otherwise very compatible with MS Office formats, more so than OpenOffice. I have used WPS and LiberOffice for a while now, and find both to be useful MS Office alternatives. On Linux, where there is no native support for MS Office, I use LibreOffice.

14 Tips for Public Wi-Fi Hotspot Security

About 80 percent of this article seems to be pushing paid, unproven services which don't necessarily improve your privacy or safety, but will drain your wallet. A paid VPN is worth it, but the other methods are just expensive snake oil. And yes, using a local database for your password manager instead of a cloud based version is safer. Uploading an encrypted version of your password manager's database may be useful if you use multiple devices, but remember to encrypt before uploading. And also remember that some Cloud Providers mess up encrypted files when they are stored on their servers.

FYI # 1007 (Tues 8/22/2017)

How to Enable or Disable Legacy F8 Advanced Boot Options in Windows 10

To get this to work in my dual-boot with Ubuntu Linux would be fairly straightforward, since I disabled Fast Startup in my Intel NUC. But if someone is not sharing NTFS partitions, dual-booting with Linux does not necessarily require disabling Windows Fast Startup, so the options would never show up. Linux replaces the Windows Boot Menu with the GRUB Boot Menu, so you never see any of the Windows preboot screens, unless you disable Windows Fast Startup. Even my Macrium Reflect Rescue Option would not show up during Windows boot if Fast Startup were enabled.

I had to manually disable Windows Fast Startup in the NUC, and I did not use any Command Line code. There is a setting for Fast Startup in Windows 10. From the Windows 10 Settings window, go to System > Power & sleep and click Additional Power Settings. There you will find the checkbox which will be checked if Fast Startup is enabled. Just uncheck it and click the Save Changes button. ( https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht501793 ) (These instructions are not Lenovo specific, and still work as of the Version 1607 Anniversary Update.)

Note that the Windows Fast Startup setting is not the same as the BIOS Fast Boot setting. You will still have UEFI Boot, but Windows startup will have the screen which includes Startup Options (F8).

Prepaid Wireless Phones: A Good Deal?

I had a bad experience with paying for a prepaid T-Mobile non-smart phone with a credit card. The minimum payments each month resulted in massive accumulations of minutes and texts, with no rollover. The result was that I was throwing away money. My current pay as you go plan does not roll over, but costs less than the minimum payment for the old prepaid T-Mobile plan. With data, minutes and texts I pay US Mobile less than $10.00 per month, and I can add minutes or data if I need to during the month. So pay as you go vs. prepaid is usually a better deal, in my limited experience. Prepaid phones also have a reputation for being used as "burner" phones, so I like to steer clear of them. I don't think there's any way to tell by the cell number or the carrier name when a phone is prepaid, but if anyone ever found out, it could look shady.

Windows 10: Microsoft promises never to repeat upgrade campaigns 'forced downloads'

Microsoft's German subsidiary has agreed the company will not download files to Windows users' PCs without permission.

I don't know about in Germany, but here in North America, Version 1703 (Spring Creators Update) is being pushed on users of Version 1507 through Microsoft Update with no warnings. This story simply does not align with the present updates reality here in the USA.

Friendly neighborhood hacker helps family regain access to locked car

One-of-a-kind key lost? Nothing that chip reprogramming can’t solve!

This really is not applicable to normal people who don't buy a high-end Japanese car from a dealer who purchased it through an auction in Japan and didn't even bother to furnish a backup key. Just these facts mark the car's owners as foolish in many ways. If your car, your key and the chip and even the physical blank are all one of a kind, maybe you should invest in backup keys before you lose the one and only irreplaceable original key. And don't expect company support for a car bought at auction and resold to you through a non-corporate dealer.

For a phone carrier to offer a Miracast dongle is a bit disingenuous to begin with. Many Android phones when upgraded to Nougat (Android 7) will not be able to connect with Miracast dongles anymore. (Marshmallow or Android 6 could connect to Miracast dongles.) (Google wants us to use their Chromecast instead.)

So this company is selling dongles which won't work with their phones. Sweet (not!). This is the same issue I'm having with my Moto G4 phone and my ScreenBeam Mini2 dongle. Android 7.1.1 is supposed to restore Miracast compatibility, but who knows when existing Android phones will get this update? It's been promised since May, 2017. If you pay a little more, you can get a Miracast dongle with Microsoft support and full Windows 10 compatibility. But it still won't work with Android 7.0 phones.

10 incredible things you didn't know your Android could do

I'd be very careful about enabling the Developer Mode. This mode still does not allow you to do things which require "rooting" the phone (another very dangerous thing to enable). For example, restoring Miracast connectivity is possible in Android 7.0, but you have to root the phone, go into a system file, and edit its contents, then successfully save the edited file. One error in this sequence and your phone can become bricked. Developer Options can have the same bricking effect. Depending on how badly bricked the phone becomes, it may or may not be recoverable.

Windows 10 Insiders: Microsoft won't tell you about known bugs anymore

Microsoft has decided Windows Insiders don't need to know about the bugs it's aware of.

Well, I am not a Microsoft Insider, but if I were one, I'd be plenty worried about this trend. Microsoft is not telling folks about bugs, and they are accelerating their release cycle drastically. Does the phrase "train wreck" come to mind? It is possible that Microsoft's current haste and carelessness may lead to a big problem at any moment. And no one in the Insider Ring will see it coming.

THESE ARE THE BEST LINUX DISTRIBUTIONS FOR THE BEGINNER

Why was ARCH included in a Beginners list? ARCH has perhaps the steepest learning curve of any Linux Distro except maybe Gentoo. It is definitely not the ideal distro for Linux beginners, unless you come from an IT environment and have a real knack for learning new user environments.

One week with Siri

Siri (and voice control in general) is something you either love or hate. Most people find Siri and similar voice controls natural and intuitive to use. But I don't like talking to my devices to get them to perform tasks for me. To me, devices are basically computers, not artificial people or pets.

Mozilla nears finish line for 64-bit Firefox transition

So when are they going to backtrack and fix their broken Extensions system? My last try at using Firefox under Ubuntu Linux was a disaster because even the simplest and most common Extensions no longer work, and new versions have not yet been released for the new system.

Google girds for enterprise battle with Chrome OS subscription

I hope this does not spell the end of availability of the Open Source version of Chrome OS, or the beginning of subscriptions for consumer Chromebook versions. That would not be good news.

HOW TO AVOID POTENTIAL COMPUTER PROBLEMS BY RESEARCHING WINDOWS PATCHES

What this article glosses over is that Windows 10 updates are all or nothing. You can't pick and choose components to install or not install in the Cumulative Updates. So if one component is a problem, you have to defer the whole update and hope the problem gets fixed before the next CU comes out. Feature updates (upgrades) are something it is good to be able to defer for a while, and driver updates (not mentioned in the article) can be stopped altogether.

But the worst omission in the article is that Microsoft has been providing very little detail (none anymore to Insider Track users) about just what is in each update and how it may affect devices to which the update is applied. Sites like Woody Leonhard's blog and Computer World are trying to fill in some of the blanks, but Microsoft is making actual patch research next to impossible. Instead, we have to wait for users without blocking and deferral options to start screaming before we find out anything about buggy patches. This is not good in any situation, much less an Enterprise installation.

HOW MECHANICAL KEYBOARDS WORK AND WHY YOU WANT ONE

Some people really like mechanical keyboards and will pay extra to have one. Most of us do just fine with less costly options. If you don't like your current keyboard, there are lots of options out there. I prefer to be able to try out a keyboard before I buy it, where this is possible. Then buy that model wherever it's most affordable.

Microsoft agrees to changes after criticism of its Windows 10 update practices

Exactly what changes are these? I haven't seen anything in US tech articles about any changes whatsoever in Microsoft's upgrade pushing policies. In fact, they just began to push Version 1703 (Spring Update) to users who are trying to block Feature Updates. No warnings whatsoever -- just suddenly comes down through MS Updates.

Lightbulb: open source F.Lux alternative for Windows

I don't like the color changes this group of utilities cause. The yellowing of the screen is way too extreme even at the most conservative settings.

[Windows 10 Tip #9] - Tune-Up Tools

Sometimes these tools can really help with disk space or performance issues. But only if used just once in awhile. Most people who start in with PC cleanup tools overdo it and regret their actions only later when an upgrade fails or some other disaster results. Be very sure "duplicates" and "empty files/folders" are really garbage before deleting them!

This emergency feature on your smartphone could save your life

Google Trusted Contacts looks interesting, especially for families trying to keep tabs on wandering children or elders. Speaking of battery backup, since I had a UPS from my U-Verse setup, I attached it to my current Comcast setup. That backs up my home phone for many more hours than anything Comcast might "rent" on its own. What Mobile Phone users need is emergency 911 location services. These are rolling out in some communities, but are not available everywhere. If 911 is not location aware of your mobile phone, you will have to talk the operator through to your exact location. This is not a good practice in an emergency, especially on an unfamiliar road.

Verizon Now Refuses to Stream 1080p to Any Smartphone, Period

Unless you are casting from the phone to a bigger screen (which almost certainly implies you have WiFi available nearby) there is no technical reason to stream any HD media to a phone. Your phone's screen would have to be at least 12 inches or so, to see any difference between SD and HD streaming. Tablets to notice the difference between 720p and 1080p would need to be nearly twice that large. The Mobile Hotspot limits are ridiculous -- they won't keep many of those customers with a policy like this. I love how there's now "beyond unlimited" in their marketing jargon. That's like going "beyond infinity" in space-time.

How Long Will Your Hard Drive Last?

I must say, including my DVRs, I have NEVER had a hard drive fail. Some of mine are over a decade old, and they still fire up and data can be read off them. Fortunately, I never went with "bleeding edge" interfaces back in the day -- they're all USB of one flavor or another.

NY CTO: Universal broadband is the 'fundamental path forward for civilization'

Now if only everyone could get together and give us a good definition of just what the minimum standards for "broadband" are.

Pinterest wants you to think of it as a visual search engine

Visual Search has always been a defining characteristic of Pinterest. Nothing new here except a new marketing push.

You Might Not Need Complex, Alphanumeric Passwords After All

Length has always trumped complexity in passwords and pass phrases.

Hollywood's favorite video-editing tools arrive in a free app

Avid is a well-respected company, and a free offering from them is indeed welcome news.

Follow-Up on the NextDoor Web Site

I found a flaw in their verification system. Some of my alleged "neighbors" were actually old, unpurged listings of folks who used to live nearby, but I know they no longer live in those apartments. (I know who does live there, and the names don't match.) So for apartment communities, user address listings must be taken with a grain of salt.

FYI #1004  (Sat 8/19/2017):

Here's Why You Should Mute Your Phone When on Hold

It never ceases to amaze me how totally ignorant many people are about "open mics" like this. When you are put on hold, your phone is not muted unless you hit the mute button. Duh! Also, as the article points out, nothing good has ever come out of ranting or raging at the techs or reps when things aren't working the way you want them to work. Especially not in insurance claims cases.

How to Boost Your Wi-Fi Speed by Choosing the Right Channel

My Comcast XFinity gateway's route auto-selects the least-busy channel, and will sometimes switch between the 2.4 GHz Band and the 5 GHz Band to get the bets performance. I don't set its channel manually unless the performance is really getting impossibly poor. Which rarely happens.

Laptop Touchpad Not Working? Here Are 5 Fixes

Usually, these issues are driver related, so that's the go-to area to focus on. If it's a case of MS Updates replacing an OEM driver, use wushowhide to block the MS Updates driver from downloading again.

How to Use Nextdoor to Get to Know Your Neighbors

I could have waited for their postcard to arrive, but I got impatient. Then they would not acknowledge anything, including last four digits of social security number (which this type of site should NEVER ask for!) until I entered my Credit Card Number. This is suspicious, as thye could now place a charge on my Card. I would stay away from this site unless you are closely montoring your accounts and credit reports. Having gotten into the site, I did find some of my actual neighbors signed up there. And folks from around the community and in neighboring towns. Actually, potentially useful for the names and addresses alone. This site does not mask real names, btw. So anyone can see your actual name and address, which is verified by the site's signup process. Once inside the site, there are a lot of useful recommendations for commonly used services and businesses.

Create Your Own Windows 10 Custom Themes

Windows 10 also has built-in and downloadable Themes. They still maintain an online Gallery. I have used these Themes since Windows 7 and stikll like them. The best Themes for my tastes have pictures which can be rotated in a slide show format. On my tablet, I did an experiment involving downloading a bunch of photos from Imgur, and I made these into a Custom Theme. That turned out pretty neat.

Re. FYI # 1005 (Sun 8/20/2017):

Creating a Backup Image Using EaseUS Todo Free

I tried ToDo Free, and found their WinPE environment would not work for the bootable Rescue Media on my tablet. So I went with Macrium Reflect Free. But with still no upgrade of Macrium Reflect Free to Version 7, I am beginning to look for another alternative.

Which Android Tablets Should You Buy For Under $100?

No dedicated tablet in this price range is worth any money. There is inexpensive, and then there is just plain cheap. These are just plain cheap.

Goodbye, iPhone: My new $180 Android is good enough

Just crossing off the Moto G5 for being a bit more expensive looks to me like cutting off your nose to spite your face. I'd still go with a Moto G series if mine ever needed to be upgraded.

Kaspersky drops Microsoft antitrust complaint thanks to new Windows 10 changes

The fact of the matter is, Microsoft has changed nothing about the behavior of Windows or the upgrade installers. They never changed in the first place, so there's nothing to change back. All that has been changed is to provide better user notifications.

Google Chrome under attack: Have you used one of these hijacked extensions?

You should always update your browser extensions as religiously as you update the browser itself, or its Flash Player plugin (if you haven't killed off Flash already, and you probably should). I don't use any of the affected extensions.
