Re. FYI#1047 (Wed 10/11/2017):

USPS ‘Informed Delivery’ Is Stalker’s Dream

It's true, some form of 2 Factor Authentication should have been implemented. So we have to wait until Jan., 2018 to see this happen. Then the USPS wonders why they're going broke.

We’ve got an update for you message in Windows 10

If you are in any way controlling when updates occur, you need never be surprised by these messages. You will decide when the updates are downloaded and installed, including Feature Updates.

Bitdefender Ransomware Recognition Tool

If you're a victim of ransomware, I thought this meant you could not run anything on the affected device? So how would you download and run this tool? Aren't you locked out of your PC?

Google Clips

Too little info to know what this thing is really doing, let alone how it decides what to shoot or how accurate it is. Note that the App only works on expensive Apple or Google phones. And at 3 hours max recording time, it's not going to make it through a whole day around a busy house.

Re. FYI#1048  (Thurs 10/12/2017):

Would you pay for a Windows subscription?

The only subscriptions Microsoft has talked about so far combine Windows with Office. This combo does not appeal to me. So I'll use the stock Windows OS, which is and will remain a one-time payment per major upgrade, or per new device or VM licensed. The big problem is when devices or processors are declared obsolete and no longer supported, which is more of an expense than a subscription renewal.

In the event Microsoft goes off the rails completely, I have Linux to use, though presently I can't do wireless scanning with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. And no Miracast or WiDi either. Also, there may be occasional issues with Linux apps not being compatible with Windows apps for file types. And still a few websites which work under Windows but not under Linux. Some media streaming apps also don't do Linux.

I could investigate ChromeOS, which might go to subscriptions, but will most likely be much more in line than Windows pricing. That might be where my on the go computing would be heading. Since ChromeOS stores and shares in the Cloud, sharing files with Linux shouldn't be too much of an issue. And ChromeOS can use my wireless scanner and printer.

How a MicroSD Card Can Store Up to 400GB of Data

Given that I've heard from a lot of people who stored large numbers of photos on an SD Card, only to have it fail or become corrupted before it could be backed up, I'd be skeptical of using this capacity of SD Card for anything I wasn't prepared to lose, or instantly sync and back up.

How to Run Android on Windows With AMIDuOS

Don't count on this working with apps from the Google Play Store. Also, don't expect a good end user experience.

Driving with AR glasses may be information overload

This should be illegal.

Windows 10 update KB4041676 (build 15063.674) releases (something the may be the cause of a lot of crashed systems, look at next article)

Windows 10 gets a big October Patch Tuesday update with a slew of bugs and security fixes.

Latest Patch Tuesday update reportedly causing major issues for some [Updated]

When Woody Leonard drops his MS DEFCON level down to 1, you know something isn't going as planned with the current round of updates. I'm waiting for things to clear up before allowing any of these patches onto my devices.

Re. FYI#1049  (Fri 10/13/2017):

The Best File Extraction and Compression Tool for Windows

7-ZIP is what I generally use in Windows. PeaZip or some variant is available in Linux, so that's what I have in Ubuntu. Both work on everything I've thrown at them so far.

The Equifax Hack Started the Wrong Conversation

Interesting article, and mostly on the right track. Much to think about. I'll leave politics aside and not recommend what should or should not be legislated.

This $35 add-on will let Amazon Echos place phone calls

This uses your existing landline or VOIP service provided by your ISP. It's not tied to cell phone calling. But some form of calling from the Amazon Echo has been expected as an add-on for a long time.

Comcast appeals to 'cord nevers' with launch of Xfinity Instant TV service

Like DirectTV Now, this service requires an Internet Connection, so it isn't true cord cutting. And it offers only a limited range of channels, with many local OTA broadcast channels missing. Probably not worth the cost, depending on how much unbundled Internet access is going to cost you. Usually you will do better with a bundle of services which would include TV services.

Las Vegas Victim's Scam

Thu Oct 12, 2017 11:57 am (PDT

It's a sad state of affairs but it seems every time tragedy strikes there are predators coming out of the woodwork to prey on those who want to help. That's right the latest scam is built around a false "aid for Las Vegas victims." Here's more on the topic from CyberHeistNews.

"Heads-up! Bad guys are exploiting the Las Vegas shooting. There are fake Facebook pages, tweets are going out with fake charity websites, and phishing emails are sent out asking for donations to bogus Vegas Charities.

Don't fall for any scams. If you want to make a donation, you can go to http://www.charitynavigator.org before you consider giving to any charity. This free website will let you know if the charity is legitimate or a scam. It will also tell you how much of what it collects actually goes toward its charitable work and how much it spends on salaries and administration expenses.

Do not click on any links in emails or text you might get. Whatever you see in the coming weeks about Las Vegas disaster relief... THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK.

Re. FYI#1041  (Thurs 10/05/201):

ClearStream TV review: This digital TV tuner lets you pause and rewind live TV

And an onboard Wi-Fi adapter lets you stream live TV to any streaming box or mobile device on your home network.

For $99.00, this should be a much more capable device.

HUGE Windows bug leaves gadgets open to malware infections

This is the report from Bleeping Computer:

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/microsoft-will-not-patch-smbloris-vulnerability/

The flaw at worst can cause a crash in the target computer, and that is sort of like a DDoS attack. Even then, most firewall settings can or do block repeated attempts to connect via this avenue. Still, if a patch were possible, it would have been nice of MS to do so. BTW, this is yet another gift from the NSA Eternal Blue SMB suite.

How to Turn Off Autoplay Videos

I don't use these sites, so I can't report on hwo well my browser extensions block these behaviors. These would be in addition to the steps outlined in the article.

Forget privacy! New feature lets you record ANYTHING, texts, photos, and videos on your phone

I hate to burst anyone's bubble, but screen recorders, especially those which work under Linux, have had these capabilities for years. The feature may be new to iPhones, but it is not a new concept or implementation.

Creators Update now on just over 72 percent of Windows 10 PCs, AdDuplex says

I don't know about other people, but the Creators Update is on both of my devices. and working well, once the MS Store was fixed on the tablet.

One mistake people make when cutting the cord on cable TV

In other words, depending on your watching habits, cord cutting can be more expensive than keeping the ISP's bundle. Especially if you lose the Internet Service discounted rate because you no longer have a bundle. All streaming services need an ISP for the Internet connection. I like network TV, local TV and do not like sports and movie channels. So for me, cord cutting might be worth looking into if I weren't using Comcast for my home phone.

YubiKey 4C Nano Is the World's Smallest USB-C Authenticator (I use the Type-A keys)

This very small YubiKey is designed to be left in the port. Which I suppose would be fine if devices had spare USB-C ports. Few have extras these days.

Misleading headlines about Equifax's *earlier* hack

Calm down. They did go public about the earlier security incident.

I feel safer already. ()

Re. FYI#1042  (Fri 10/06/201):

Is privacy dead in an online world?

There is literally zero connection between the Equifax leak and the inherent loss of privacy in an online world. We did not signup for nor voluntarily provide data to Equifax or any other repository of credit information and scoring. There is ZERO connection!

Anti-virus program is a must, but Defender might not be the way to go

As front-line defense, I can think of a half-dozen products which outperform Windows Defender, even in its Fall Creators Update form. But as a second-opinion scanner, I use Microsoft Safety Scanner, which is basically the WD scanning engine and definitions. And I use three or four other second-opinion scanners. For active defense, hardening your web browser (with extensions and settings) is yet another layer anyone can put in. EMET, another layer of defense, has been integrated into the Fall Creators Update, at least for Windows 10 Pro.

Yahoo Admits: All 3 Billion Email Addresses Hacked

Google: Windows 10 patches put Windows 7 users in danger

The same argument was used by XP holdouts when it didn't get patches for several vulnerabilities a couple of years ago. If you don't upgrade, you can expect to become less and less secure, especially after the Windows 7 End of Life in January 2020 (two year from soon).

Otherwise, Version 7 is very much like Version 6, so this tutorial (scraped from Macrium's own website) is pretty much up to date. Remember to make new Rescue Media and new Boot Options when upgrading.

You've been doing your passwords all wrong! Fix them with these new tricks

If you're not using a password manager, chances are you're still doing passwords wrong. I can't await for relaible systems along the lines of Windows Hello which do away with passwords.

How to Monitor Linux System Health and Performance with Netdata

This illustration is one of the ugliest interfaces I have ever seen. And I use Linux, so that's saying a lot! I use a combination of many different AppIndicators and Apps, including a few Command Line Apps tom monitor various aspects of my NUC when it's running under Linux. I also use different apps under Windows to monitor system performance, and to see whether Windows Updates has actually stalled, or is just being its usual slow self.

Reg Converter lets you convert .reg file to .bat, .vbs, .au3 files

I do wonder why you would want to do this. Converting .bat to .exe has advantages, but these conversions look like they serve little or no purpose other than to obfuscate that the file will mess with the Windows Registry if run.

Elon Musk Wants to Help Puerto Rico Rebuild Its Grid Using Tesla Batteries [Updated]

My take on this -- Puerto Rico represents a unique opportunity to test Musk's ideas about using renewables and off-grid capabilities. It's almost a blank slate down there, and with the right Venture Capital, the whole island could be rebuilt to very futuristic standards. It doesn't need the existing electric utility, but with that Company's cooperation, the project has real potential to make a big difference and serve as a model for other areas where a disaster could leave a region isolated.

Paying for antivirus software is mostly BS

I take one small exception to this article. BitDefender has a comprehensive security suite with a single subscription, which covers devices across all OSes except Linux, and covers IoT security, and you can get it with an appliance which serves as a hardware firewall. All for a reasonable price. Otherwise, I woudl agree that you don't really get much more value from paid antivirus vs. free. I use Avira Free on my two Windows devices. Linux antivirus and anti-rootkit is free and seems to work well, but never seems to find anything malicious. YMMV.

Microsoft will support Windows 10 on older PCs until 2023

You'll get security updates but no more feature updates. The usual story when a device or OS version is in Extended Support. Better than a total cutoff. The Clover Leaf processors could not be made compatible with newer versions of Windows 10 just by updating drivers or firmware, in case anyone still wonders.

Driving with AR glasses may be information overload

Does augmented reality really belong in your car?

There will have to be new regulations. Generally, AR and VR are incompatible with safe driving. Or even bike riding or walking. (See: http://abcnews.go.com/US/distracted-walking-petextrians-endangering-streets/story?id=32990067

Apply Windows Image using DISM Instead of Clean Install

This was one of the tools I used to fix the Microsoft Store on my tablet when it went berserk after the Spring Creators Update. The User Account was particularly munged, and it got fixed by totally removing the Store App (using CCleaner), running DISM and restarting twice, then reinstalling the Store App and the Built In Apps with a PowerShell script. It took two runs to get everything reset. The wsreset command did nothing useful. Note that this device has a base WIM or compressed, clean Windows File. This was probably where the clean system files were fetched from. Otherwise, I would have needed a clean and up to date Windows 10 Creators Update USB installer to work from.

Installing Timeshift into Linux Mint 18.2 non-BTRFS

Once CloneZilla boots (from CD), I can back up or restore my entire Ubuntu Linux iinstallation in under five minutes. So I am not impressed with the need for a "system restore for Linux". The main reason Windows needs such a tool is that updates and failed installers can really mess up drivers and the Windows Registry. Linux has no Registry to mess up, and if any system files get munged, it's usually best to roll back with a system image, rather than to try to pick apart the damages and make spot-repairs. So, I see little need for such a utility on a modern, fast PC running Linux.

If you've got your PC that messed up, you really need to do a rollback using a system image! (For Windows 10 Pro, my NUC got backed up and verified in less than 20 minutes with Macrium Reflect 7.1 -- about the same speed as Version 6. A restore operation will take a bit longer, but not more than a half-hour.)

Backup tool Macrium Reflect 7 Free Edition released

Why you might trade your wired internet connection for your phone

Cell phones do not have enough data allowance, bandwidth or freedom from throttling to compete with wired services. That math is not going to improve anytime soon. And terrestrial wired networks are nowhere near capacity. That's a myth used to keep Americans paying more for less service than anywhere else in the developed world.

Windows File Explorer crashes when I right-click

I had this issue on my NUC for awhile. I used Shell Extension View (ShExtView) and found the culprits to be CCleaner's monitoring process and two antivirus Shell Extensions. All have been cleared up with third-party application updates, and Microsoft has improved its handling of Shell Extensions with the Anniversary Update and the Spring Creators Update. The problem is no longer an issue. But then again, I no longer use AVG for my antivirus.

5 of the Best ISO Mounting Software for Various OS

I've used PowerISO and WinCDEmu. But frankly, it's been a long time since I've needed to use a CD or DVD for anything, with the important exception of CloneZilla Live for backing up Linux. I haven't found a working USB version of that yet.

In Equifax Hearing, These Five Data-Security Ideas Emerged

A few flaws in the proposed solutions. Embedding regulators -- how well did that work with the banks in 2008? Who's watching the Watchers? Replacing Social Security Numbers with other Universal ID Numbers only shifts the same problem to the new universal identifiers. But at least our taxes and medicare information, as well as social security accounts, might be safer. Finally, as one with a "thin credit file" I can tell you that if lenders, banks, insurance companies or utility companies can't get your complete information and history from one of the three reporting companies, you will be denied credit, accounts, insurance, car rentals, and much, much more. There is no point in giving us the right to remove our information if doing so can and will be used against us. We have the right to see what's collected and to challenge errors -- this won't hurt our ability to obtain and use credit, etc. But removing our information will only harm us. Just keep this in mind if such a measure ever passes and is signed.
