Fortunately, the vital info is contained on the phone itself. This

what's not good -- that so many Americans can't or won't verify

whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they
may be relied on to set them to rights." I fear the reverse is now
showing itself to be true, that wherever the people are
ill-informed they cannot be trusted with their own government;
that even when things get so far wrong as should attract their
notice, they may not be relied on to set them to rights. Where
this current trend ends, I dare not guess.
Optane SSDs are superfast and can even work as extra RAM
If the disk is
being used to swap RAM, this is slow and inefficient, and prone to
failures. It's the old Windows Swap File resurrected. If you need
more RAM, get more system RAM. I find that in Linux, nearly any
amount of RAM overhead the system has in my NUC can be used to
facilitate transfers to external drives and to buffer streaming
media or transcoding activities. Windows has limits, but it can
also make use of RAM for caching and buffering. Up to a point,
more system RAM is far better than trying to use storage media for
RAM purposes. And remember, SSDs have a limited number of rewrite
cycles before their memory cells wear out. This application of
Optane hastens that wear.

“Fast Startup” Does, and How to Disable It
My one use case
for disabling Fast Startup is in a Linux dual-boot with shared
NTFS data partitions. If left on, Fast Boot will prevent Linux
from accessing the locked partitions. Unfortunately, Fast Startup
shuts down in such a way that all Windows-visible partitions are
mapped to a hiberfile, which cannot be disturbed lest the whole
restart process would crash. So, nothing can be changed on any
Windows-visible partition between startups with Fast Startup
enabled. I don't know of any way for end users to prevent mapping
of every Windows-visible partition in this way. It would be nice
to be able to exclude data partitions which are not tied to active
Windows apps or processes.

an image covering one-third of the text. I had to download the

comments, three were about this inability of this online mag to
properly write HTML code. That aside, Laptop Mag has whole
articles which are nothing but advertisements for products. So I
do not wonder that such an advertorial might appear in such a
publication. This article makes me respect Laptop Mag even less
than I already did, if that is even possible. I fact-check every
one of their "news" stories for this reason. As for the content,
bloatware is indeed a necessary evil, but in lightn of the way
Microsoft has integrated the bloat into the OS, and the way some
vendors, at Microsoft's urging, have abused Secure Boot, I cannot
support the position of this advertorial.
Studio – Essential PC Tools All in One Place
The one thing I
don't like about this product's description is that it's based on
WinPE 5, which is associated with Windows 8. This version is
getting long in the tooth. Also, the company's site says that the
boot CD/DVD can't change the installed operating system. That
seems weird and may totally negate the usefulness of the utility's
tools. The rest of the tools simply leverage Windows 10's own
built-in tools, adding little if anything to them. Well, at least
this program is free.
Types of Light Bulbs You Can Buy, and How to Choose
In my apartment
some of the built-in fixtures take bulbs which are CFL or some
sort of spotlight which I'm pretty sure is not LED (though these
can be replaced with LEDs). Other bulbs I have are almost all LED.
In the long run, these bulbs have proven durable, impact
resistant, and electricity efficient. I have had two LEDs fail so
far out of over a dozen I have been using. Compare this with
almost half of the CFLs I have replaced getting broken before they
ever got to the recycling containers, and the appearance that a
lot of the bulbs dropped into these bins at Home Depot have gotten
broken before the store retrieves them. That's a lot of mercury
going into the environment!

Why You Should

big-bang update brings you speed and a new look
I'll check this
out when it goes mainstream. (Firefox 59, scheduled for Spring
2018, is where this tech is really going to take off -- if you
have enough hardware muscle to drive it -- which my NUC does
have.) I'm pretty busy right now assessing all the new
WebExtension ports of my favorite old-style Extensions, as well as
some I had never heard of before, but folks seem to like them.
How to test your
Some of the
tests are Windows-specific, and soem of the links go to sites no
longer maintained. Linux can be set up to block more traffic and
more ports than Windows, so my NUC with Chrome 63 Beta under
Ubuntu Linux with an active firewall, looks very good indeed. Ping
testing should be ignored on Comcast networks, as some devices,
including my all in one wireless printer and scanner, need to be
open to pings, and Linux needs to be opened up to these pings, for
communications to work. Found that out the hard way with XSANE and
VueScan scanner software and drivers.
The Daily Mail

actually increase the risk of photos being leaked, not protect us.
But in Australia this is actually a sensible scheme.

My one and only
contact with Geek Squad was in their Downers Grove (63rd at Lemont
Road) store a couple of years ago, when I was building my NUC.
It cost me
$49.00, but the tech immediately realized he was dealing with
someone who knew what I was doing with computers. I knew exactly
what needed to be tested, and what the issue was. (The Windows 10
Pro Full Retail install wouldn't go through -- turned out to be my
error in not turning off Secure Boot and not forcing a restart
when it was needed. I also needed to get the NUC's hardware
certified after a RAM installation error fried a RAM stick.)
As long as they
know they're dealing with an informed customer, all you need to do
is politely decline any upgrade or add-on software or peripherals
they may offer.
It really helped
that at the time NUCs were a novelty -- all the Best Buy techs in
the store wanted to get their hands on my little wonder. They
really liked the ten-inch stand-alone HDMI monitor -- but
unfortunately I got that from B&H Photo on a closeout, so I
couldn't advise them where they could get more of the same or

You could just

Any of these are
good recommendations. Avira Free is not as quick the first time as
on subsequent runs, as it learns which files have changed and
scans mostly the changed ones. Avast is like that too, but Avast's
scanning engine is far faster than Avira's Luke Filewalker
scanner, especially if you graduate to full file system scans. I
prefer Avira, due to spying reports about AVG and Avast. Avira,
when properly configured, eventually stays mostly in the
background and doesn't bother system performance or resources. If
you have a lot of IoT Things, BitDefender's security appliance is
a better bet, and the one (non-free) antivirus subscription will
cover all your devices, at home and away.

Reasons Why You Should Trust Linux
This does not
mean you should believe that Linux apps don't spy on you. That
depends on where you get them. Also, not all Linux apps are free
for all to use and reassemble or recompile. Some of my most useful
Ubuntu apps are "non-free" in this sense. There is also a point of
view that transparency makes Linux more vulnerable to zero-day
exploits, as hackers have open access to the underlying code and
could spot flaws or make changes before the Developer Community
could spot the issues. More developers also means more errors in
the code base, often resulting in annoying instabilities which
persist for a long time before a consensus develops as to how to
resolve the issues.
