Re. FYI#1077  (Fri 11/10/2017):

Chrome to Block Sneaky Web Page Popup Ads

and Chrome is Being Updated to Block More Web Annoyances

I must be doing something right. I use nine extensions with Chrome Beta (Ten, but I keep No Script off most of the time.), and I never have these issues. Well, almost never.

Google Backup and Sync Tool lets you backup files & images to Drive & Photos

My phone does this, but I prefer for my PC to back up photos locally. I don't use my tablet to take or edit photos, so it can get by with just Google Drive Sharing and its own SD card(s).

What Is My Phone’s IMEI and What Is It For?

I just took note of all the info for my Moto G4 (better late than never!). My phone does not identify the SIM ID Number anywhere. But all else is identified, although WalMart in their infinite wisdom, covered the Motorola box label and bar codes with their own label. Fortunately, the vital info is contained on the phone itself. This info should be copied to a piece of paper and stored in a safe place. Most phone owners only think to do this after a theft or loss. By then it's too late.

This $45 Yi Home Camera has 1080p, night vision, and motion detection

Isn't this one of those cheap Chinese products for the IoT we were just warned about? And they use their own Cloud Storage servers, located -- you guessed it -- inside China.

Comcast's internet service was down in several major US cities (updated)

I had one frustrating day because of this outage. Last I read, the company which messed up Comcast's access to the Internet Backbone was owned by CenturyLink, a Comcast competitor. RCN got reconnected very fast. Comcast -- eh, not so much. I'm just saying...

What's All the Buzz About CoinHive?

I changed the anti-mining extension I was using in Chrome because of this article. But I still use blockers and have had no issues in Linux with Chrome Beta.

Russian Instagram posts reached 20 million users in the US

This is not good.

I'll tell you what's not good -- that so many Americans can't or won't verify the facts before they retweet on Twitter and believe the posts on Facebook. Thomas Jefferson noted "...that wherever the people are well informed they can be trusted with their own government; that whenever things get so far wrong as to attract their notice, they may be relied on to set them to rights." I fear the reverse is now showing itself to be true, that wherever the people are ill-informed they cannot be trusted with their own government; that even when things get so far wrong as should attract their notice, they may not be relied on to set them to rights. Where this current trend ends, I dare not guess.

Re FYI#1078  (Sat 11/11/2017):

Intel’s new Optane SSDs are superfast and can even work as extra RAM

If the disk is being used to swap RAM, this is slow and inefficient, and prone to failures. It's the old Windows Swap File resurrected. If you need more RAM, get more system RAM. I find that in Linux, nearly any amount of RAM overhead the system has in my NUC can be used to facilitate transfers to external drives and to buffer streaming media or transcoding activities. Windows has limits, but it can also make use of RAM for caching and buffering. Up to a point, more system RAM is far better than trying to use storage media for RAM purposes. And remember, SSDs have a limited number of rewrite cycles before their memory cells wear out. This application of Optane hastens that wear.

Target stores can order your items online if they're out of stock

They still can't deliver the items while you are still in the store. For the sorts of things I shop for, I could go somewhere else (even another Target location) before the items could be delivered. And I sure would not wait for grocery items to be shipped or delivered to my apartment.

It’s time for the internet to block fake emails

EMail authentication sounds really good if you live in the USA. But if you live in Iran or China, maybe not so much. I'm just saying, anonymity exists for a reason. And the result is a tradeoff of convenience vs. privacy. Blocking unauthenticated emails is a job for our spam filters, not for our ISPs or "the Internet".

I haven't had any of those. Maybe a couple of freeze-ups due to stuck processes, but not many of those lately.

What Windows’ “Fast Startup” Does, and How to Disable It

My one use case for disabling Fast Startup is in a Linux dual-boot with shared NTFS data partitions. If left on, Fast Boot will prevent Linux from accessing the locked partitions. Unfortunately, Fast Startup shuts down in such a way that all Windows-visible partitions are mapped to a hiberfile, which cannot be disturbed lest the whole restart process would crash. So, nothing can be changed on any Windows-visible partition between startups with Fast Startup enabled. I don't know of any way for end users to prevent mapping of every Windows-visible partition in this way. It would be nice to be able to exclude data partitions which are not tied to active Windows apps or processes.

In Defense of Windows Bloatware

This article has an image covering one-third of the text. I had to download the page and deconstruct the HTML to read the article. Of five comments, three were about this inability of this online mag to properly write HTML code. That aside, Laptop Mag has whole articles which are nothing but advertisements for products. So I do not wonder that such an advertorial might appear in such a publication. This article makes me respect Laptop Mag even less than I already did, if that is even possible. I fact-check every one of their "news" stories for this reason. As for the content, bloatware is indeed a necessary evil, but in lightn of the way Microsoft has integrated the bloat into the OS, and the way some vendors, at Microsoft's urging, have abused Secure Boot, I cannot support the position of this advertorial.

Active@ Data Studio – Essential PC Tools All in One Place

The one thing I don't like about this product's description is that it's based on WinPE 5, which is associated with Windows 8. This version is getting long in the tooth. Also, the company's site says that the boot CD/DVD can't change the installed operating system. That seems weird and may totally negate the usefulness of the utility's tools. The rest of the tools simply leverage Windows 10's own built-in tools, adding little if anything to them. Well, at least this program is free.

The Different Types of Light Bulbs You Can Buy, and How to Choose

In my apartment some of the built-in fixtures take bulbs which are CFL or some sort of spotlight which I'm pretty sure is not LED (though these can be replaced with LEDs). Other bulbs I have are almost all LED. In the long run, these bulbs have proven durable, impact resistant, and electricity efficient. I have had two LEDs fail so far out of over a dozen I have been using. Compare this with almost half of the CFLs I have replaced getting broken before they ever got to the recycling containers, and the appearance that a lot of the bulbs dropped into these bins at Home Depot have gotten broken before the store retrieves them. That's a lot of mercury going into the environment!

Colorado voters really want city-run broadband service

Be careful what you wish for! These types of projects have failed in more cities than they have succeeded. New York City converting pay phones to broadband access points is only feasible because the City isso compact. Denver and Boulder are very spread-out, and the issues with wireless infrastructure in mountainous terrain also will impede any project started there.

What You Need to Know About Chrome Extension Permissions

Is Microsoft's Windows Signature Edition Worth It?

First, these devices cost less than anywhere else except Amazon, unless you are looking for the latest bleeding-edge tech. Second, I have bought several devices through this program, and I am satisfied with my purchases. I ended up with a free upgrade from Home to Pro for my inconvenience. Amazon can't beat that value!

How to Secure Your (Easily Hackable) Smart Home

The best strategy is to separate the IoT network from the normal Internet network, and use a hardware appliance to secure the IoT side of the network. I have no financial interest in BitDefender or its products or services.)

This should kill any lingering doubts about Face ID on the iPhone X

It's gradually becoming evident that Apple's FaceID will work. The question is, how fast (especially in cold weather) and how well (how discretely). E.G., Can it distinguish one face from another, even with winter clothing on?

Idiots are already dropping their $1,000 iPhone Xs... just for clicks

I hope they're getting paid for all those clicks -- to the tune of adding up to the full replacement costs, if they are using actual iPhones. Intentional user-caused damages are not covered under AppleCare. And the Geniuses do know enough to check.

Why You Should Seriously Consider the New Firefox Quantum Browser

and Firefox's big-bang update brings you speed and a new look

I'll check this out when it goes mainstream. (Firefox 59, scheduled for Spring 2018, is where this tech is really going to take off -- if you have enough hardware muscle to drive it -- which my NUC does have.) I'm pretty busy right now assessing all the new WebExtension ports of my favorite old-style Extensions, as well as some I had never heard of before, but folks seem to like them.

How to test your Firewall software

Some of the tests are Windows-specific, and soem of the links go to sites no longer maintained. Linux can be set up to block more traffic and more ports than Windows, so my NUC with Chrome 63 Beta under Ubuntu Linux with an active firewall, looks very good indeed. Ping testing should be ignored on Comcast networks, as some devices, including my all in one wireless printer and scanner, need to be open to pings, and Linux needs to be opened up to these pings, for communications to work. Found that out the hard way with XSANE and VueScan scanner software and drivers.

The Daily Mail whisks up Kaspersky fears - but where's the meat?

The Daily Mail is not a tech site and it is not a mainstream newspaper. It's the online version of a London tabloid (like the New York Post). So what do you expect?

The Facts: Non-Consensual Intimate Image Pilot

Australia, like England, is not running a private Internet model. There is official government monitoring of traffic. That monitoring is why this type of scheme can work at all. In the US where we don't approve of our government spying on us, these monitoring measures are not in place. To try to use our Facebook in this way would actually increase the risk of photos being leaked, not protect us. But in Australia this is actually a sensible scheme.

What Is USB Debugging Mode on Android?

Make sure you know how to fully reflash your phone's OEM ROM before doing anything with debugging mode enabled. It is very easy in that mode to do things which will render the phoen useless or disable one or many features. Never replace an OEM Android ROM with Stock Android unless the phone is owned by you and not locked to a carrier. And never attempt to root a phone which is locked to a carrier.

How to Use Your Free Windows 10 License After Changing Your PC’s Hardware

Last I heard, as long as your Windows 10 license is associated with a Microsoft Account, you can connect a new hardware install to that account, de-authorize the previous hardware, and authorize the new hardware. This has worked for several CCS members.

Will Quantum Computing Render HTTPS Obsolete And Throw Your Security Away?

So far, quantum computers require special conditions to operate. As long as this is the case, HTTPS is secure. Long before the quantum computers will break out of the lab, there will be methods, some using advanced AI, to create new security standards. So far, the defenders have the upper hand over any present-day attackers.

Ubuntu: A Beginner’s Guide

This article and related materials can be downloaded as a PDF mini-book. I would recommend keeping this information on hand for anyone just starting with Linux (or even some of us who like having a handy reference available even after years of experience).

USB Disk Security protects your computer from infected USB drives

You do not need special security software for this task. Windows 10 by default does not allow USB autoplay, and you can tighten this up with Group Policies or Registry Edits. Most third-party AV software also has this feature. I use Avira Free, and it has this feature.

Re. FYI#1082 (Wed 11/15/2017):

Time to Call The Geek Squad?

My one and only contact with Geek Squad was in their Downers Grove (63rd at Lemont Road) store a couple of years ago, when I was building my NUC.

It cost me $49.00, but the tech immediately realized he was dealing with someone who knew what I was doing with computers. I knew exactly what needed to be tested, and what the issue was. (The Windows 10 Pro Full Retail install wouldn't go through -- turned out to be my error in not turning off Secure Boot and not forcing a restart when it was needed. I also needed to get the NUC's hardware certified after a RAM installation error fried a RAM stick.)

As long as they know they're dealing with an informed customer, all you need to do is politely decline any upgrade or add-on software or peripherals they may offer.

It really helped that at the time NUCs were a novelty -- all the Best Buy techs in the store wanted to get their hands on my little wonder. They really liked the ten-inch stand-alone HDMI monitor -- but unfortunately I got that from B&H Photo on a closeout, so I couldn't advise them where they could get more of the same or similar.

Your mileage with more mundane repairs and testing may vary.

How to Open Tabs from Your Last Session Whenever You Start Your Browser

Unfortunately, I clear my History when exiting my browser, so this is not useful to me unless I make sure not to do that. Which is sometimes the case. Instead, I use an extension to save the urls from the last session as a file. Then it's a matter of copy/paste, like I do with the postings inside of FYI listings here.

This is an interesting idea, as hard-coding these devices to call the Fire Department can result in fines if there is no emergency. Combined with a cam and the ability to use smart phones, messaging or Personal Assistants (let Alexa or Google ask loudly if anyone is home, then if they don't respond but you know someone is there, call in the  Emergency) your 911 calls can be limited to verified emergency situations. The same principle may apply to calling the Police after an entry alarm goes off. After all, we don't want to startle the Amazon delivery folks! (See stories about letting Amazon Delivery gain access to your home or apartment to make inside deliveries.)

Pre-Installed apps are missing after Windows 10 Update

You could just thank your lucky stars and remove the rest of the Microsoft Store Apps. But seriously, this is usually a case of the Manifests or the Cache becoming corrupted. At worst, uninstall all Store Apps (including the Store itself -- CCleaner can do everything up to this point) then reinstall all the built-in apps using a downloadable tool from Microsoft. Due to using your Microsoft Cloud Account, the user data will reassemble themselves and the apps should appear and update normally.

How to Periodically Scan Your Computer With Windows Defender While Using Another Antivirus

I wonder, is this any mmore effective than simply downloading a fresh copy of Microsoft Safety Scanner and running it? Of course, there's the convenience of scheduling the task, but otherwise, what's the difference?

Best Free Antivirus Alternatives to Windows Defender

Any of these are good recommendations. Avira Free is not as quick the first time as on subsequent runs, as it learns which files have changed and scans mostly the changed ones. Avast is like that too, but Avast's scanning engine is far faster than Avira's Luke Filewalker scanner, especially if you graduate to full file system scans. I prefer Avira, due to spying reports about AVG and Avast. Avira, when properly configured, eventually stays mostly in the background and doesn't bother system performance or resources. If you have a lot of IoT Things, BitDefender's security appliance is a better bet, and the one (non-free) antivirus subscription will cover all your devices, at home and away.

Give Facebook your nude pics to tackle revenge porn

Turns out, this scheme was and is for Australia. It works because Australia, like England, officially monitors Internet traffic and can identify individual files in transit (as can our ISPs here in the USA). In the USA, we would never tolerate such overt intrusions into our privacy. So the scheme would actually backfire if used here. Don't do this, and our US Facebook is not recommending that we should do it.

5 Perfect Reasons Why You Should Trust Linux

This does not mean you should believe that Linux apps don't spy on you. That depends on where you get them. Also, not all Linux apps are free for all to use and reassemble or recompile. Some of my most useful Ubuntu apps are "non-free" in this sense. There is also a point of view that transparency makes Linux more vulnerable to zero-day exploits, as hackers have open access to the underlying code and could spot flaws or make changes before the Developer Community could spot the issues. More developers also means more errors in the code base, often resulting in annoying instabilities which persist for a long time before a consensus develops as to how to resolve the issues.

How to Keep Your Windows PC and Apps Up to Date

How to Install and Use CCleaner

Registry Cleaning will not help system performance or save much disk space. Fixes MIA for Many Linux Kernel Flaws

"All of the exploits require physical access to a computer, so the attack vector is limited to social engineering engagements," noted Russ Wickless, a senior penetration tester at Schellman & Company.

"None of these look like they can be deployed over the Internet," he told LinuxInsider.

My take: Meh. I have bigger fish to fry, and I am not using this Linux kernel version. There are several higher kernel version levels available. And they all get uppdated every week or two in my Ubuntu Linux. No one but myself supplies USB devices to my NUC, which is my only Linux installation.

Under Insulate, there should be mention of finding and filling or blocking all sources of window and door leaks and drafts. From My Own Reading:

You should use a TV antenna, even if you have cable. Here's why

https://www.techhive.com/article/3235614/home-tech/you-should-use-a-tv-antenna-even-if-you-have-cable.html

I must say, here in Waltham, MA where I get decent OTA TV reception, my TiVo Roamio  OTA DVR gets its off the air content used and recorded almost every day. The Comcast DVR I use for prime-time programming, since I don't want any reception issues to get in the way of my shows. But for news and most PBS programs, OTA reception is quite acceptable. Plus I get the dot-channels, except for two or three of the PBS dot-channels which don't reach all the way out here from Cambridge (due to hills). Strange that it's only the PBS stations, and only some of their dot-channels. For really nice PBS shows like Nature and Nova, I can also use the Comcast DVR for the best quality recordings. I don't have Cable for the non-broadcast channels, but it's nice to know some of them are there. Mostly, it's a matter of getting Internet and landline phone service in the bundle, which is cheaper than rolling my own package. In my second contract year, I'll re-evaluate.

Chrome to Block Sneaky Web Page Popup Ads and Chrome is Being Updated to Block More Web Annoyances

Fix Google Chrome black screen problems on Windows 10/8/7

As for the content, bloatware is indeed a necessary evil, but in light of the way Microsoft has integrated the bloat into the OS, and the way some vendors, at Microsoft's urging, have abused Secure Boot, I cannot support the position of this advertorial.

How (Not) to Upgrade to the Latest Windows 10 Version

Colorado voters really want city-run broadband service

Be careful what you wish for! These types of projects have failed in more cities than they have succeeded. New York City converting pay phones to broadband access points is only feasible because the City isso compact. Denver and Boulder are very spread-out, and the issues with wireless infrastructure in mountainous terrain also will impede any project started there.

What You Need to Know About Chrome Extension Permissions

I usually allow all extensions to do what they want. I operate in Linux on a desktop PC, so there isn't much chance I'll want to restrict extensions there. But if I ever want to do this, I can.

Is Microsoft's Windows Signature Edition Worth It?

First, these devices cost less than anywhere else except Amazon, unless you are looking for the latest bleeding-edge tech. Second, I have bought several devices through this program, and I am satisfied with my purchases. Even without a service contract, the Microsoft Store helped me straighten out a Signature Edition tablet when a Windows Feature Upgrade went sour.

(BitDefender BOX helps, and includes an antimalware subscription which can cover all your devices, even mobile, for one reasonable price. I have no financial interest in BitDefender or its products or services.)

How Do You Deal with Tech Fatigue?

It's gradually becoming evident that Apple's FaceID will work. The question is, how fast (especially in cold weather) and how well (how discretely). E.G., Can it distinguish one face from another, even with winter clothing on?

How to enable Near Share on Windows 10

Nearfield file transfers need to be secured to work out the way they are envisioned. Bluetooth 4.0 and above is fine for this purpose, but Wi-Fi nearfield file transfers may be vulnerable to interception. At least one of these two methods is acceptable.

10 Security Checks Everyone Should Perform Regularly

I'll admit I don't always do every one of these things in a timely fashion. But I do try to do most of them. Linux and Windows both have tools which can help with all of these functions, but no one seems to have all the tools under one umbrella.

MiniTool ShadowMaker lets you backup and restore data quickly

MiniTool is a good company. I would trust their products unless someone finds some huge flaw in them. My preference is still Macrium Reflect Free.

Firefox 57 release overview

I'm still gradually working my way through the new ports of old Extensions to Web Extensions. Looks like about one-quarter of that job (developers porting their Extensions) is done now.

Use shared USB over network remotely with USB Redirector Client

I see no practical use case for doing this. Other transfer protocols are far more efficient. And it seems this may be somewhat risky from a security point of view.

Customize Firefox 57 with CSS

The gist here is that Classic Theme Restore, which had access to the Firefox GUI APIs, got broken by the transition to WebExtensions. (WebExtensions do not have access to the Firefox GUI APIs.) So this workaround (and it is messy and technical) arrives until someone may write a companion program to fix these things about the new Firefox automatically with user-friendly GUI tools. It will happen, it's only a matter of time.

The Company only relented on this issue after a lot of bad tech press and user complaints. Harmony Remotes remain very popular.

The Differences Between Linux’s Human Interface Guidelines

It's always interesting to peek under the hood and see what rationales developers use when creating all those crazy (and sometimes very good) Human Interfaces (GUIs). This article has links to the HIGs for all major OSes most people use. But they still don't have links to what rationales were used when my Comcast DVR and my TiVo received their new "improved" Human Interfaces. I may even have to buy a new Remote for the TiVo!

Windows File Explorer crashes when I right-click

I had that issue until the Spring Creators Update. It had to do with poorly-implemented Shell Extensions put into the Right-Click Menu by third-party apps. Discovering just which Shell Extensions from which vendors are responsible sometimes can take a lot of detective work and trial and error testing.

DMEX: more Windows Explorer functionality

New air-gap jumper covertly transmits data in hard-drive sounds

In the year and nearly one-half since this article was posted (yes, this is a 2016 article) there has been very little mention of active attacks against home users or home networks using these techniques. They remain purely theoretical risks.

Solid-state lithium-ion battery

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_lithium-ion_battery

"Solid-state lithium-ion batteries are a type of solid-state battery where the liquid electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries is replaced with a solid material. Some designs also eliminate binders and separators. Solid-state designs do not overheat or catch fire, because the solid electrolyte prevents dendrites from creating short circuits."
