Firefox sets kill-Flash schedule
http://www.computerworld.com/article/3098606/web-browsers/firefox-sets-kill-flash-schedule.html
This follows Google Chrome's moves to do
the same in Chrome 57:
Google removes Plugin controls from
Chrome
http://www.ghacks.net/2017/01/29/google-removes-plugin-controls-from-chrome/
(This is not entirely true. I have found
several little icons in or near the Chrome 57 URL Bar which do
allow controls over plugins on a per-page basis. This includes
allowing or now allowing Flash Player content. And Flash Player
has its own special Content setting under Advanced Settings >>
Privacy .)
Google plans to start blocking Flash in
Chrome this year [2016]
http://www.theverge.com/2016/5/15/11679394/chrome-to-block-flash-later-2016
Some sites are still Flash dependent, but
these are getting to be fewer and fewer.
Re. FYI #851 (Sun 3/5/2017):
Your internet speeds will be insanely
fast when 5G arrives
This is Cell Data -- imagine how fast you
will burn through the 22GB 5G data caps! (Actually, these caps may
rise dramatically, as 5G can carry a lot more simultaneous data.)
BTW, for home Internet over the wire, Comcast already does offer 1
Gbit/sec Internet in limited areas. AT&T is expected to follow
suit. Google, AT&T and others are getting Millimeter Wave Internet
into a few select cities already. And no, this new tech will not
come cheaply.
This affordable accessory protects your
webcam from prying eyes
Web Cam covers at $10.00 apiece. You can
get a lot of post-its for that price! My NUC doesn't have a web
cam, but my tablet does. I choose not to cover the tablet webcam,
as it usually only gets used when I'm not doing anything
sensitive.
Security error leaves NY airport
servers unprotected for a year
Sounds a lot like that spam operation
which got busted in a very similar way.
You Want Faster and Safer Internet?
I have OpenDNS enabled for IPv4 and IPv6
on my tabelt and my NUC for Widnows and (on the NUC) Linux. No
problems, and it generally works a lot better and faster than the
ISP provided DNS for AT&T services.
How to Make All Your PC Times Match
With an Atomic Clock Sync
One place where time sync is important is
when making a backup of a system which is out of sync. This can
result in time-date stamps on some files being way off, even if
there's no BIOS or CMOS battery issue. When backing up with
CloneZilla for Linux, the program objects to these errors, and
asks if I want to change the system time to a more reasonable
value. I say No, but wonder if this affects restore ability down
the road. (So far, I ahve yet to see a Linux CloneZilla restore
fail for this reason. Other reasons yes, but not for time sync
reasons.
No internet, secured – Fix Windows 10
WiFi error
The easiest and often the most effective
way to solve this temporary Windows 10 issue is to shut down the
system and restart it. This refreshes rthe entire Networking Stack
and usually resets the IP Address. Then most of the time it's
clear sailing again.
You can make Windows 10 act like
Windows RT with the Creators Update
And I would want to voluntarily do
this...Why?
Why You Should Use a Vertical Windows
Taskbar
I do this in Linux with the Unity Desktop,
but without a true Launcher feature, in Windows this has never
made much sense to me. Back in the day, Windows XP had the Office
Sidebar, which also acted as a Quick Launcher. In Windows 10 I
simply use Quick Access, most often from File Explorer. Also, All
Apps from the Start Menu. But not a vertical Task Bar.
Check Out This Free Windows Clone
These folks have been successfully sued by
Microsoft a few years back for Reverse Engineering Windows
components. I don't expect this OS to ever emerge from Beta.
Windows 10 Will Let You Snooze Creators
Update
You can also actually defer this and other
"feature upgrades" in at least the Pro edition.
Google helps put aging SHA-1 encryption
out to pasture
I've had this and TLS1 disabled everywhere
I can, for a couple of years now. No problems so far with any web
content or email downloads.
What a Linux Desktop Does Better
The main thing my Unity Desktop doesn't do
that my Windows 10 desktop does do, is crash File Explorer every
time a file is updated. That's the Windows 10 Shell Extensions
Bug, supposedly addressed in the Creators Update. I generally find
Ubuntu Desktop and its Desktop GUI to be more stable than Windows,
except on weird graphics configurations like my old laptop with
hybrid Intel-NVidia graphics. That config. would regularly crash
Unity badly. I find Linux security issues to be understated in
this article.
Re. FYI #852 (Mon 3/6/2017):
What is a Sandbox?
Free Sandboxing software for Windows 10 PC
Software
virtualization, especially for browsers, has been entering the
mainstream of Windows computing for awhile now. Most of us
probably have at least some of this and don't even notice it. This
is different from the approach of tools like EMET, which rely on
rules and permissions restrictions to keep software from going
rogue. Both approaches are applicable to today's threat
environment. (EMET itself seems to be going away in favor of Group
Policies. Linux uses something like this in its AppArmor toolset.)
Uber devises secret Greyball tool to
evade officials
Why wouldn't an illegal and unregulated
company use illegal and unregulated apps to continue its "business
model". Read or listen to Chicago area news, and you will long for
the "corrupt regulations" of the taxi industry. Some Uber drivers
and imposters are having a field day. Then there's the viral video
of Uber's CEO and one of his drivers having a "discussion" about
the realities of being an Uber driver. Truly eye-opening.
How to Enable The Experimental “Ribbon”

Office Envy, anyone?
