HUGE Windows bug
leaves gadgets open to malware infections
This is the
report from Bleeping Computer:
The flaw at
worst can cause a crash in the target computer, and that is sort
of like a DDoS attack. Even then, most firewall settings can or do
block repeated attempts to connect via this avenue. Still, if a
patch were possible, it would have been nice of MS to do so. BTW,
this is yet another gift from the NSA Eternal Blue SMB suite.

In other words,
depending on your watching habits, cord cutting can be more
expensive than keeping the ISP's bundle. Especially if you lose
the Internet Service discounted rate because you no longer have a

hardening your web browser (with extensions and settings) is yet
another layer anyone can put in. EMET, another layer of defense,
has been integrated into the Fall Creators Update, at least for
Windows 10 Pro.

Elon Musk Wants
to Help Puerto Rico Rebuild Its Grid Using Tesla Batteries
My take on this
-- Puerto Rico represents a unique opportunity to test Musk's
ideas about using renewables and off-grid capabilities. It's
almost a blank slate down there, and with the right Venture
Capital, the whole island could be rebuilt to very futuristic
standards. It doesn't need the existing electric utility, but with
that Company's cooperation, the project has real potential to make
a big difference and serve as a model for other areas where a
disaster could leave a region isolated.
antivirus software is mostly BS
I take one small
exception to this article. BitDefender has a comprehensive
security suite with a single subscription, which covers devices
across all OSes except Linux, and covers IoT security, and you can
get it with an appliance which serves as a hardware firewall. All
for a reasonable price. Otherwise, I woudl agree that you don't
really get much more value from paid antivirus vs. free. I use
Avira Free on my two Windows devices. Linux antivirus and
anti-rootkit is free and seems to work well, but never seems to
find anything malicious. YMMV.

Image using DISM Instead of Clean Install
This was one of
the tools I used to fix the Microsoft Store on my tablet when it
went berserk after the Spring Creators Update. The User Account
was particularly munged, and it got fixed by totally removing the
Store App (using CCleaner), running DISM and restarting twice,
then reinstalling the Store App and the Built In Apps with a
PowerShell script. It took two runs to get everything reset. The
wsreset command did nothing useful. Note that this device has a
base WIM or compressed, clean Windows File. This was probably
where the clean system files were fetched from. Otherwise, I would
have needed a clean and up to date Windows 10 Creators Update USB
installer to work from.

boots (from CD), I can back up or restore my entire Ubuntu Linux
iinstallation in under five minutes. So I am not impressed with
the need for a "system restore for Linux". The main reason Windows
needs such a tool is that updates and failed installers can really
mess up drivers and the Windows Registry. Linux has no Registry to
mess up, and if any system files get munged, it's usually best to
roll back with a system image, rather than to try to pick apart
the damages and make spot-repairs. So, I see little need for such
a utility on a modern, fast PC running Linux.

If you've got

longer, but not more than a half-hour.)

go with the free edition unless you absolutely need to manage

Why you might
trade your wired internet connection for your phone
Cell phones do
not have enough data allowance, bandwidth or freedom from
throttling to compete with wired services. That math is not going
to improve anytime soon. And terrestrial wired networks are
nowhere near capacity. That's a myth used to keep Americans paying
more for less service than anywhere else in the developed world.

Explorer crashes when I right-click
I had this issue
on my NUC for awhile. I used Shell Extension View (ShExtView) and
found the culprits to be CCleaner's monitoring process and two
antivirus Shell Extensions. All have been cleared up with
third-party application updates, and Microsoft has improved its
handling of Shell Extensions with the Anniversary Update and the
Spring Creators Update. The problem is no longer an issue. But
then again, I no longer use AVG for my antivirus.

Hearing, These Five Data-Security Ideas Emerged
A few flaws in
the proposed solutions. Embedding regulators -- how well did that
work with the banks in 2008? Who's watching the Watchers?
Replacing Social Security Numbers with other Universal ID Numbers
only shifts the same problem to the new universal identifiers. But
at least our taxes and medicare information, as well as social
security accounts, might be safer. Finally, as one with a "thin
credit file" I can tell you that if lenders, banks, insurance
companies or utility companies can't get your complete information
and history from one of the three reporting companies, you will be
denied credit, accounts, insurance, car rentals, and much, much
more. There is no point in giving us the right to remove our
information if doing so can and will be used against us. We have
the right to see what's collected and to challenge errors -- this
won't hurt our ability to obtain and use credit, etc. But removing
our information will only harm us. Just keep this in mind if such
a measure ever passes and is signed.
